What are National Awards?
As the name suggests, the Indian national awards are presented by the Govt. India to people because of their special service or good performance in various fields regardless of their age, category, occupation, religion, etc. The awards are divided into various categories, including Community Awards, Gallantry Awards, Sports Awards, Book Awards, and Peace and Leadership Awards.
There are mainly four categories;
- Civilian awards
- Gallantry awards
- National Sports Awards
- Literatures award
Among these, the most highest position is considered for civilian and gallantry awards.
- Civilian Award
These awards are further divided into four types:
- Bharat Ratna
- Padma Vibhushan
- Padma Bhushan
- Padma Shri
BHARAT RATNA( Jewel of India)
India’s most prestigious citizen award awarded in the field of arts, literature, science, and social services for outstanding service or excellence. However, from December 2011 onwards, it was resumed to be offered in any field of human effort. Similarly, the sports category is included. Sachin Tendulkar therefore qualified and won the Bharat Ratna and became the youngest recipient and the first athlete to receive the award.
There is no official nomination process for this award. It is the Prime Minister of India who has the authority to nominate and recommend the name of the people to the President of India. However, only three names can be nominated for this award by the Prime Minister without discrimination on the basis of race, position, occupation, etc.
Padma Vibhusan
It is India’s second-highest-ranking citizen award, presented on January 2, 1954. It is awarded for exceptional performance or service in the fields of art, science, and public service, including the services of public servants.
Design of Padma Vibhushan:
This circular prize is made of bronze. Its diameter is 4.4 cm, and its thickness is 0.6 mm. The medal has a geometric pattern. The name the Padma is printed on its front side with the text Devanagari (Hindi) in the upper part, and the word “Vibhushan” is marked on the lower part on the front. There is a lotus flower between these two words in the middle. On its backside, you can see the national emblem where “Satya Meva Jayate” is printed. The inscriptions, the geometric pattern, and the borders are made of copper, and some of the highlights are made of white gold. A dark purple ribbon is attached to the prize as it is worn around the neck.
Padma Bhushan
Padma Bhushan is the third-highest medal for citizens awarded by the Government of India. With different services in any field.
Padma Bhushan Design:
It is also a circular prize made of copper. The lotus flower with the name “Padma Bhusan” is printed on its front side in the Hindi language. Although, in the background, the national emblem and the words “Satya Meva Jayate” are printed. It is provided with a ribbon with white stripes. Apart from this, hot copper is used to making words, geometric patterns, and borders, while one medal is made of yellow gold.
Padma shri
In order of rank, Padma Shri is the fourth highest citizen award. This award is given to individuals for achievements in any field, including service provided by public servants. The shape of the prize is the height of the geometric pattern in a circle. The words “Padma” and “Shri” are affixed to the top and bottom of the middle lotus flower. All attachments are made of stainless steel and the periphery is lined with copper.
Gallantry Awards
Heroes’ prizes are awarded for outstanding acts of heroism or self-sacrifice before power.
There are six categories for the Gallantry Awards.
- Param Vir Chakra
- Maha Vir Chakra
- Vir Chakra
- Ashok Chakra
- Kirti Chakra
- Shaurya Chakra
The most important facts about the Gallantry Awards
- Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra are the first three awards in this category established after independence.
- On Independence Day, these awards are presented twice a year.
- Three other championships, the Ashok Chakra Class I, the Ashok Chakra Class II, and the Ashok Chakra Class III, were presented in 1952. They were given the names Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra later.
- Recipients of gallantry awards are selected through a specific selection process.
There are other awards like for sport and literature, which are of equal importance, but when it comes to ranking, the most valued ones are the civilian awards.
