The Indian government launched the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) project in 2015 to address issues of gender and female equality in the country. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao translates as ‘Save the girl child, educate the girl child.’

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Initiative

The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana is a nationwide effort coordinated by the Ministries of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), Human Resources Development (MoHRD) (MoHRD), and Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW). Each body is responsible for certain components of the plan. The MoWCD is in charge of budgetary control and administration of the BBBP. However, the MoH&FW is in charge of capacity growth and quality control. In addition, the MoHRD has budgeted for community participation programs.

The following is a breakdown of roles and responsibilities:

Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD)

• Provide overall direction and assistance to states, union territories, districts, and other stakeholders in the BBBP scheme’s implementation.
• Oversee the scheme’s administration.
• Gather best practices and efforts for enhancing the worth of the female child.

Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW)

• Ensure that the Central Supervisory Board meets on a regular basis (CSB)
• Organize two national-level meetings every year to examine the Pre-conception & Pre Natal Diagnostic Technique (PC & PNDT) Act’s implementation.
• To assess success, have five regional review sessions each year. 

Ministry of Human Resource Development (MoHRD)

• Activate school management committees (SMCs) to guarantee that all girls are enrolled, retained, and finish secondary school.
• Create community dialogues to encourage females to participate in Balika Manch.
• Build girls’ toilets that are functional.
• Complete the project of Kasturba Gandhi Bal Vidyalayas.
• Launch a campaign to re-enroll females who dropped out of secondary school.

Objectives of The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana

The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana attempts to accomplish the following objectives:

• Increase the child-to-adult ratio.
• Make sexual equality and women’s advancement a priority.
• Avoid gender-biased and sex-selective eradication.
• Ensure the girl child’s survival and safety.
• Encourage girls’ education and involvement.
