Indian Army is the second largest of all the other armies in the world. The army is also the largest component of all the other Armed Forces of India. There are over 1.2 million troops actively working in the Indian Army. The army has 34 divisions. The Headquarters of the Indian Army is located in New Delhi. The overall command of the Indian Army is under the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Structure of Indian Army:
Division: Every Division in the Indian Army is led by General Commanding Officer (GOC). The rank will be that of the Major General. The division has a strength of fifteen thousand combatable troops and eight thousand support elements. At present the Army of India has thirty seven divisions including four Re-organized Army Plains Infantry Divisions (RAPID) Action Divisions, Eighteen divisions of infantry, ten mountain divisions, three divisions of armory and two divisions of artillery. Every division has a certain number of Brigadiers.
Brigade: Around three thousand troops in number along with support elements forms a Brigade. A Brigade of Infantry consists of three infantry battalions in usual along with several services & arms. Every Brigade is led by a Brigadier. Along with the presence of Brigades in different Divisions of Army, our Army also consists of five Armor Brigades that are independent. Also, the Indian Army has fifteen Brigades of Independent Artillery along with seven Brigades of Independent Infantry, one Brigade of Independent Parachute, three Brigades of Independent Air Defense, two groups of Independent Air Defense and four Engineer Brigades that are Independent. All of the Independent Brigades are directly headed by the commander of Corps.
The Battalion: Colonel is the commander of the Battalion. It is the important fighting unit of the infantry. A Battalion consists of combat personnel that are more than nine hundred in number.
Company: A Company is led by the Captain or the Major. Around 120 groups of soldiers form a Company.
Platoon: A platoon acts as intermediate in between Section and the Company. A lieutenant or a Captain is the head of the Platoon. Based on the presence of the Officers (Commissioned), also a junior officer of the rank of Subedar can lead the Platoon. The total attendance of 32 troops forms a Platoon.
Section: Section is the smallest of all the military outfits present in the Indian Army. A section consists of 10 military personnel. A officer (not commissioned) of the rank of Sergeant or the rank of Havildar is the head of the Section.
Lieutenant General of Indian Army.
The rank of Lieutenant-General of the Indian Army is below the rank of General of the Indian Army. A Lieutenant General is an officer of three-star general rank in the Indian Army. The rank above the position of Major General is that of Lieutenant General.
Conclusion:
The Army of India presently consists of more than 1.2 million active troops thus making it the second-largest army in the entire world. This fact itself describes the fact that it required a wide number of officers of different ranks to manage the personnel. Thus, to manage these personnel the Indian Army has a wide number of Divisions. Starting from Brigade to Section. On the one hand where the Division consists of three thousand personnel whereas on the other hand the Section being the smallest division in the Indian Army consists of a group of 10 military personnel of the Indian Army.
