A ‘smart city’ is a city with basic infrastructure that uses smart solutions to provide a decent quality of life, and a clean, and sustainable environment. Smart cities concentrate on their most pressing demands and potential to improve people’s lives. To make a difference, they use a variety of strategies, including digital and information technologies, best practices in urban planning, public-private partnerships, and policy change. They constantly prioritize people.
Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state, has the most cities in the Centre’s Rs 48,000-crore scheme to construct 100 smart cities, with 13. Tamil Nadu is followed by Maharashtra with ten cities, Karnataka and Gujarat with six cities each, and West Bengal and Rajasthan with four cities each. Bengaluru, Patna, Kolkata, Noida, and Gurgaon are among the major cities missing from the list.
Smart Cities Mission (SCM):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s 100 Smart Cities Mission on June 25, 2015. The Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission is an urban redevelopment and retrofitting program aimed at developing smart cities that are both citizen-friendly and sustainable. With an influx of people moving to cities and areas rapidly expanding, the government is seeking better ways to manage complexities, increase efficiency, and improve quality of life. As a result, cities must monitor and integrate infrastructure in order to better optimize resources and provide better services to inhabitants.
5 Important Facts about SCM:
- These selected 20 cities have a total population of 3.54 crore people.
- PM Narendra Modi’s Smart Cities program would grant Rs 48,000 crore in central financing to chosen cities to improve their infrastructure and service delivery via the use of improved technology and e-governance.
- States and urban local bodies will play a critical role in the development of Smart Cities.
- The Smart City Mission’s main planning principle is the bottom-up approach.
- Over a five-year period, a total investment of Rs.50,802 crore has been proposed in the selected smart cities and towns.
Features of Smart City:
- Smart Data: The goal will always be to identify patterns or inefficiencies in order to improve citizens’ living conditions. The smart city’s beating heart will be data, which will be collected from citizens, vehicles, and the city’s surviving infrastructure. All knowledge about the city will be available in real-time in the palm of your hand in the smart city.
- Smart Transportation: It’s possible to never drive in the smart city. Instead, there will a system to board a smart car that will communicate with other nearby vehicles to guarantee that you get from point A to point B as quickly and effectively as possible.
- Smart Infrastructure: City planners and architects might use the data to design buildings that are optimized for people based on past data.
- Smart energy: The concept of a zero-emission metropolis is on the verge of becoming a reality as the future smart city will be powered by a variety of sustainable energy sources.
- Smart Internet of Things: Though there is considerable debate, correctly integrating IoT into inhabitants’ daily lives would ensure that city life is of the highest quality.

Apart from Jhansi, Allahabad, and Kanpur Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, Varanasi has also been recommended for consideration.
UP chief commissioners and chairpersons of municipalities reviewed the selection of cities on Wednesday, and infrastructure secretary Alok Ranjan instructed mayors, and municipal facilities in their respective towns to improve their prospects of being picked for development as a Smart City.
