Sex Ratio as per Census 2011 of Uttarakhand
As per the census of 2011, the sex ratio of the state stood at 963, which means for every 1000 males, there were 963 females in the state. This was a minor increase from the census of 2001, in which the sex ratio came out to be 962. If we talk about the child sex ratio, i.e., the number of females per thousand males in the age group 0–6 years in a human population, the number is
even more disappointing. The child sex ratio as per census 2011 of Uttarakhand was 890, down from 908 in the year 2001. When comparing the sex ratios of rural and urban areas, the rural area appears to fare better in both the general and child sex ratios. According to the 2011 census, the rural sex ratio was 1000 females per 1000 males, while the urban sex ratio was 884 females per 1000 males.
In terms of the overall Sex Ratio, the state has shown that its indicators are better than the national norms. According to the census of 2011, the nation’s overall sex ratio was 940. Still, the state’s child sex ratio (886) is a cause for concern, and the PC&PNDT Act must be fully implemented, along with behaviour change messages, to prevent female foeticide.

Concerns Over Low Child Sex Ratio in Uttarakhand
Usha Negi, the head of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), expressed her concern regarding a recent NITI Ayog report claiming that Uttarakhand has one of the worst child sex ratios in the country. The child sex ratio in the State is 840, compared to the national average of 899, according to the NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2020-21. In response to this study, Negi expressed her scepticism of the NITI Aayog’s SDG index report, claiming that the State had made significant progress in changing the child sex ratio at birth. “I think the State should verify these figures as more apt data can be collected by the State Government here,” said Negi.
She did add, however, that if Uttarakhand’s latest child sex ratio data follows the Aayog’s report, it is a cause for concern for everyone in the state. In such a situation, Negi continued, it’s critical to figure out what’s causing the state’s dropping kid sex ratio. “Throughout Uttarakhand, the state government organises a variety of programmes to raise public awareness about gender equality. What is the cause for this drop in child sex ratio if it is also unlawful to determine the sex of an unborn child? This shows that something isn’t quite right.” Negi stated.
The SCPCR chief went on to say that authorities should keep an eye on the situation and identify those at the district level who assist others in determining the sex of an unborn child, which might be a big contributor to the country’s declining child sex ratio. Meanwhile, Rekha Arya, the minister of Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD), recently asserted that the NITI Aayog’s study on Uttarakhand’s child sex ratio differs from the state’s data. She has stated that she will write to NITI Aayog’s vice chairman and provide the state’s child sex ratio data.
