Early Life
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875 in Leuva Patel Patidar community in Nadiad village in Gujarat. His full name is Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel and popularly known as Sardar Patel. Sardar Patel’s father, Zaverbhai Patel, served in the Army of Queen of Jhansi and mother, Ladbai, was inclined towards spirituality. Patel was a very brave character since childhood.
After matriculating, Sardar Patel continued his studies and became a bachelor of law and then went to England to become a barrister. After returning to India, he continued to practice law in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Role in Freedom Fight
In 1918, after being inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Patel tried to change his image as a wealthy lawyer and started fighting for the peasants.
He played a key role in organising and mobilising Kheda Satyagraha in 1918, led by Gandhi to protest the high taxes the British imposed on farmers despite crop failures due to heavy rains and plague.
Patel was greatly influenced by Gandhi’s idea of satyagraha to protest oppressive British rule.
In 1922, 1924 and 1927, Patel was elected president of the city of Ahmedabad.
