A dam can be defined as a structure that is constructed across a river, a stream or an estuary for the purpose of retaining water. The purpose of building dams can be to provide water so that consumption of the same can be done by humans. Water can also be useful for irrigating semi-arid or arid land. Salient Features of Dams of Himachal Pradesh

A dam can be explained as a barrier that is mainly constructed for the fulfilment of the goal of providing water for diverse purposes such as hydroelectric power plants, industrial processes, daily use of humans, irrigation purposes etcetera. The dam can be constructed across a stream, a river or an estuary for the purpose of retaining and using water. Some of the famous dams in India can be Kallanai Dam in the river Kaveri, Tehri Dam in the Bhagirathi river, Rihand Dam in the Rohand river etcetera. 

There are various dams in Himachal Pradesh and each dam has its own features. Firstly, we shall discuss the Largi, Mandi dam which is built on the river and the closest city to this dam can be called Mandi. Another dam that is there in the Himachal Pradesh can be Sawra-Kuddu Dam. The purpose of the Sawra-Kuddu dam can be noted as hydroelectricity. The Sawra-Kuddu project can be described as a Run-of-river scheme. 

Another dam that can be found in Himachal Pradesh is the Nathpa Jhakri Dam which can be described as a concrete gravity dam. It was in 1993 that the Nathpa Jhakri Project had begun. It can be said that Nathpa Jhakri may have the longest as well as the largest headrace tunnel. As per reports, it may be noted that the project can be considered a benchmark for other hydroelectric projects that may take place in the future.
