Role Of Freedom Fighters In Freedom Struggle!

India's journey towards freedom was tough. But, the freedom fighters of the country never lost their hope. Below is a detailed look at the role of these determined Indian freedom fighters.

The people who selflessly sacrificed their blood and even their lives are known as freedom fighters. Fortunately, a fair share of freedom fighters is present in every country. India is a country blessed with a large number of freedom fighters. These Indian freedom fighters made sacrifices that cannot even be imagined. Their sacrifices and strive for freedom cannot even be put into words. Their sacrifice of blood and soul has left the generations after them in their debt. From starting several revolutionary freedom movements to opting for the path of non-violence to attain their country’s freedom, the freedom fighters took several different paths and finally won India’s freedom from the British on 15th August 1947. 

Freedom fighters & their role in the Indian freedom struggle

People from every corner of the country came together with a common motive of getting freedom for India. Although no one list can comprise all the names of Indian freedom fighters and their contributions to the freedom struggle, below are the names of the top 10 freedom fighters of India and their exemplary contributions. 

 

  • Sardar Vallabbhbhai Patel

One of the most popular personalities when talking about freedom fighters is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the secretary of a well-known political organization Gujarat Sabha. One of his numerous contributions includes starting the Kheda Satyagraha Movement in 1918. He started this Satyagraha in Gujarat under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. His contributions did not limit here, as in 1928, he started the fight for the people of Bardoli who were striving to pay the increased taxes during the financial crisis. 

 

  • Mahatma Gandhi

After returning to his motherland- India, Mahatma Gandhi campaigned around the country to know the various problems faced by the country’s people in every corner. After this, to free the people from these problems, Gandhi started some major movements- 

  • Champaran Satyagraha in 1917
  • Kheda Satyagraha in 1918
  • Ahmedabad mill strike in 1918

Even after these movements, his struggle continued with the Non-Cooperation movement, Salt Satyagraha, and the Quit India Movement. He also started several movements for civil rights. 

 

  • Jawaharlal Nehru

A member of the Home Rule League Movement, Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the top 10 freedom fighters of India. He took part in several movements for freedom and even got arrested and spent time in prison. He was an active participant in movements like Non-Cooperation Movement and Salt Satyagraha. Jawaharlal Nehru aimed for Poorna Swaraj for India from the British. 

 

  • Lala Lajpat Rai

In 1881, Lala Lajpat Rai joined the Indian National Congress. He is known for establishing the Punjab National Bank. His participation in the protests against the Bengal partition is commendable. Lala Lajpat Rai was also an active participant in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and the protest against the Rowlatt Act passed by the British Government. 

 

  • Bipin Chandra Pal

Bipin Chandra Pal was also a member of the Indian National Congress. Due to the discriminatory nature of the Arms Act, he pleaded to repeal the actin 1887. The Swadeshi Movement was advocated by Bipin Chandra Pal along with Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He also protested against the Bengal partition. The Non-Cooperation and Swadeshi Movements were two of the numerous movements he participated in. 

 

  • Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was a revolutionary freedom fighter. The most revolutionist act of Bhagat Singh was to kill JP Saunders to avenge the killing of his leader- Lala Lajpat Rai. Bhagat Singh and his two companions- Rajguru and Sukhdev- were hanged to death for this act. 

 

  • Chandra Shekhar Azad

He was also involved in the killing of JP Saunders to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Along with this, he was also involved in Kakori Rail dacoity and the Non-Cooperation Movement. 

 

  • Subhas Chandra Bose

After the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, Subhas Chandra Bose joined the struggle for the freedom of India. He was an active member of the Non-Cooperation Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement and was a member of the Indian National Congress. 

 

  • Chittaranjan Das

Popularly known as the ‘Friend of the Nation’, Chittaranjan Das was one of the founders of the Swaraj Party. Also, he was the leader of the Non-Cooperation Movement in the Bengal region. 

 

  • Bal Gangadhar Tilak

Bal Gangadhar Tilak promoted nationalist ideas among the Indian people by starting the Shivaji Utsav and Ganeshotsav. One of his numerous contributions includes the initiation of the Swadeshi movement. The Indian National Congress extremist wing was also started by him along with Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai.

No matter how high one speaks about the role and contribution of freedom fighters in India’s freedom struggle, it will never be enough. They were the ones who took every possible and even the impossible way to get freedom for their country. The contribution of the freedom fighters can never be expressed in any set of words.
