Punjab is the largest state in India by area. Water supply is a prominent field of great importance because water is considered to be the basic necessity for all life on this planet. Punjab has many water resources like rivers, reservoirs, and aquifers. Still, the Punjab water supply has been a major problem throughout this region, particularly during the summer season.

The Punjab water supply system in India is a major cause for concern. Poor delivery systems, constant discharge and leakage from pipelines, and the increasing pollution from various mines and chemical factories have led to countless citizens lacing their drinking water with chemicals and bacteria.

The water supply system and its necessity:-

Water supply is a prominent field of great importance because water is a basic necessity for all life on this planet. The water supply system, including installation and maintenance, covers the water from ponds, lakes, or other sources to homes, schools, and businesses.

In India, the water supply infrastructure is underdeveloped and, at times, inadequate. Structured water management plans help the farmers enhance their products while incorporating effective water management in their diet programs. Water management comes as a vital program in the field of agriculture.

Punjab water supply system:-

Punjab has been historically recognized as the breadbasket of India and a green paradise given its renowned canal system, lush greenery, and the presence of large irrigation canals, small canals, and streams. It did not mean that there was sufficient water supply that would meet the demands of this fertile region therefore Punjab water supply systems are present. Punjab has a fair amount of water bodies, making it one of the richest states in India. The state also receives a good amount of rainfall which makes irrigation easy. However, according to recent studies and surveys, the present Punjab water supply system is insufficient to handle the increasing population. There are many viable ways to tackle the issue and overcome the water supply problems.

The Punjab water supply and sanitation department:-

The Punjab water supply and sanitation department are responsible for providing clean drinking water and sanitation facilities in the Indian state of Punjab. A departmental organization under the first-tier head known as the primary boss of the state, called Chief Secretary Punjab to the Government of Punjab, is primarily responsible for providing water supply and sanitation to customers in cities and towns throughout the state. The statewide mission is to provide a sustainable cover of safe drinking water for all its citizens by 2019, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship “Clean India” campaign.

The problem faced by the Punjab water supply system in India:-

  1. Poor delivery systems,
  2. constant discharge
  3. leakage from pipelines,
  4. the increasing pollution from various mines
  5. chemical factories have led to countless citizens lacing their drinking water with chemicals and bacteria.

The state’s increasing population has put a lot of pressure on the available natural resources. Though river Satluj can be considered one of the biggest water sources in the state, it is putting continuous strain on its capacity to provide fresh drinking water for the ever-increasing population. For many days, the state has been facing issues related to clean drinking water & it is not even able to tackle such problems.

Punjabi drink 62.6% of the total water they produce. The average Punjabi household consumes 400 litres per month but only produces 182 litres of water. It means that they have to import 159 litres of water per month from other states in India. Consequently, this results in 44% of Punjab’s budget going towards water supply and infrastructure.

The Punjab Water Supply Complaint Number and the Punjab water bill:-

Punjab is the first state to launch a toll-free number to register and redress the Punjab water supply complaints from rural areas. The government of Punjab has evolved the Punjab water supply complaint number and links to pay the Punjab water bill.

For this, the government of Punjab has set up a special cell in the Chief Engineer in Mohali office that would monitor complaints on a real-time basis. The Punjab water supply complaint number, launched by the government of Punjab to deal with problems associated with the Punjab water supply and Punjab water bill payment for rural areas. The service will be available round the clock.

The service is accessible from all parts of the state. The government has employed a team of engineers, civil contractors, technicians, and other staff to monitor the complaints about water supply and take immediate steps to resolve them.

Conclusion:-

There are severe problems faced by the people regarding the Punjab water supply. Water shortages in many parts of Punjab have affected human and crop production. People face many difficulties in getting clean and potable drinking water through the piped water supply in Punjab. The government of Punjab has a water supply complaint number launched to deal with problems associated with the Punjab water supply and Punjab water bill payment for rural areas. The service of the number will be available round the clock. Online portals are made available by the government to pay the Punjab water bills for the state’s people.
