So let’s first know who the Prime Minister is? The prime minister is the head of the cabinet. Also, the Prime Minister is the leader of the ministers in the executive branch of the government. This often happens in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. The Prime Minister of India is the leader of the majority party (bahumat dal) in the Lok Sabha (lower house). In simple words, the Prime Minister is the supreme among all the ministers. Shri Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the 1st Prime Minister of India. Gulzari Lal Nanda became the 2nd Prime Minister of India, the caretaker Prime Minister for 13 days.
About Prime Ministers of India
The Prime Minister of India is the leader of the democratically elected government in the country. No special procedure has been described in the Constitution of India for the election and appointment of the Prime Minister.
Article 75 only says that the President of India shall appoint the Prime Minister. The President of India administers the Prime Minister the oath of office and secrecy before assuming office.
The Prime Minister also selects a cabinet with him, and on its recommendation, the President administers the oath of office to the other Union Ministers. However, which minister will be given which ministry, is decided by the Prime Minister.
The 1st Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru, was in this post for the longest time. The Prime Minister who served the shortest term in office is Shri Gulzari Lal Nanda. Nanda Ji was also the first acting Prime Minister of India and remained in office for 13 days.

- Pandit Jhawahar Lal Nehru
Shri Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. In the interim government formed before independence and after independence in August 1947, he became the Prime Minister of India until his death on 27 May 1964.
He was the first and longest-serving Prime Minister of India. He adorned this post for 16 years and 286 days.
- Gulzari Lal Nanda
Gulzari Lal Nanda As the first caretaker and 2nd Prime Minister of India, he was the shortest-serving Prime Minister. From 27 May 1964 to 9 June 1964, he had adorned this post for only 13 days.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri
He was the 3rd Prime Minister of India. He gave the slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” during the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965. He served in this post from 9 June 1964 to 11 January 1966 (1 year and 216 days).
- Indira Gandhi
Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister of India. Her tenure was from 24 January 1966 to 24 March 1977 (11 years and 59 days).
- Morarji Desai
Morarji Desai was the only Prime Minister of India who was awarded two of the country’s highest civilian honours. While India awarded him its highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna, Pakistan also honoured him with its highest honour Nishan-e Pakistan. His tenure as Prime Minister was from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980 (2 years and 126 days).
- Charan Singh
This is the only leader of India whom farmers consider their champions. In Indian politics, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s name became the record of such a Prime Minister who never had to face Parliament while in office. His tenure was from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980 (170 days).
- Rajiv Gandhi
Rajiv Gandhi is considered the youngest Prime Minister as he was 40 years old.
His tenure was from 31 October 1984 to 2 December 1989 (5 years and 32 days).
- Vishwanath Pratap Singh
Vishwanath Pratap Singh was the first Prime Minister to step down after the no-confidence motion. His tenure was from 2 December 1989 to 10 November 1990 (343 days).
- Chandra Shekhar
Chandrashekhar was never even a minister, and in 1990 he became the Prime Minister directly. Chandrashekhar was the 9th Prime Minister of India. His tenure was from 10 November 1990 to 21 June 1991 (223 days).
- P. V. Narasimha Rao
PV Narasimha Rao was the first Prime Minister of South India. His tenure was from 21 June 1991 to 16 May 1996 (4 years and 330 days).
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee

The Prime Minister’s cabinet consists of all the ministers under whom the various ministries of the country come and some heads of these ministries. In case of a difference of opinion, the Prime Minister can demand the resignation of a minister or advise the President to remove him. The Prime Minister can dissolve the Council of Ministers by resigning. The Prime Minister of India advises the President in the matter of appointment to important posts like the Attorney General of India, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the Chairman and members of the Union Public Service Commission, the Election Commissioners, the Chairman and members of the Finance Commission, etc.
The prime minister controls the cabinet ministers. In this way, the Prime Minister can control the whole country.
