The head of the state of the Indian republic is the President of India. On 26th January 1950 when India received the title of Republic the President’s office was created. An electoral college elects the president indirectly which comprises both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly of the Indian States and territories. The President is often termed the first Indian Citizen. The general tenure of a President is 5 years, if in any case the President is removed from the office before the tenure ends then the Vice President acts as the acting President of India.

Till now there have been 14 Presidents in India, and 3 vice presidents have acted as the Presidents of India so far. The longest term till now by any President of India is of 12 years, 107 days which was by Rajendra Prasad the first President of India and the lowest term was by an acting President, Mohammad Hidayatullah that lasted for 35 days whereas the lowest by a President was by Zakir Hussain which lasted for 1 year, 355 days. So far there was only one female President whose term lasted for 5 years. The First Female President of India was Pratibha Patil. Her term started on 25th July 2007 and ended on 25th July 2012. First Female President of India
The first female President of India was Pratibha Patil who became the 12th President of India and was also a lawyer and is the only female president to date. She was a minister in the Indian National Congress. She was also the Governor of Rajasthan and her tenure was from 2004 to 2007. On 19th December 1934, Pratibha Patil was born in Maharashtra and her father was Narayan Rao Patil. She received her Bachelor of Law Degree from the Government Law College in Bombay.
Pranab Mukherjee
The 13th President of India was Pranab Mukherjee from 2012 to 2017. The political career of Pranab Mukherjee was of 5 decades or 50 years. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. He was the 13th President of India after Pratibha Patil, the first female President of India. Pranab Mukherjee held various ministerial posts in the Government of India. Before becoming the president of India, he was serving as the Union Finance Minister, his term started in 2009 and ended in 2012. He was succeeded by the 14th and the present President of India Ram Nath Kovind.
Ram Nath Kovind
The 14th and present President of India is Ram Nath Kovind whose term started on 25th July 2017. He belonged to Uttar Pradesh and is the first president of India from Uttar Pradesh. Ram Nath served as the 26th Governor of Bihar, his term started in 2015 and ended in 2017. Ram Nath Kovind is a lawyer by profession, he has served 16 years as a lawyer and he has practised in both the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court.
