In the memory of the late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, the Indira Gandhi Center for the Arts has been established. It can be visualized as a Center that encompasses the experience as well as the study of various arts. Indira Gandhi
The first Prime Minister who was female in India was Indira Gandhi. She served as the Prime Minister for consecutively three terms as well as the fourth term until being assassinated in 1984. She was Jawaharlal Nehru’s only child. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts was inaugurated on the birth date of Indira Gandhi after her death. The Centre was launched on 19 November 1985 in the memory of the late Prime Minister.
The launch was done by Shri Rajiv Gandhi on 19 November 1985. The Centre aims to act as an important source for the arts, with a lot of importance on the oral, visual source material as well as written forms. Another aim of this Centre can be undertaking the programs regarding publication and research of dictionaries, reference works etcetera. The establishment of folk and tribal art along with a primary collection for conducting methodical scientific studies can be called another objective of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. Apart from these points, the other objectives can be the promotion of the network along with International as well as National Institutions. Lastly, the aim of researching various areas such as humanities, arts as well as culture can be called another goal of the Centre.
There were five trees which the late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi had planted and these trees were linked with the diverse divisions of the Centre. These trees can be called off a lot of significance with respect to the Indian Civilization. The five trees include the Asvattha, the Nyagrodha, the Asoka, the Arjuna and the Kadamba.
In the year 1987, the establishment of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts was done under the Ministry of Culture as a vast institution, as a Centre for various purposes such as academic pursuit, research and dissemination in the area of arts. There is a proper Board of Trustee that meet on a regular basis for giving general direction about the Centre’s work. Thus, with this, a basic idea about the organizational structure of the Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts can be there.
In the executive committee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, the Chairman is Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, the members include Dr Sonal Mansingh, Dr Bharat Gupt and Dr Daya Prakash Sinha. Lastly, the Member Secretary can include Dr Sachchidanand Joshi.
