In 1957, the Ramon Magsaysay Award was established in partnership with the government of the Philippines. The award aims to honour Filipinos who perform well in their profession, contribute to society and show strong moral character. Presented for ‘selfless service, it is considered Asia’s Nobel Prize. A Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient is also known as a Magsaysay Laureate. The summit was to strengthen the relationship between Asian and Oceania countries. President Ramon Magsaysay of the Philippines and his second wife Luz Banos, who travelled aboard Philippine Airlines Flight 841, died in the same plane crash.
