January 15 is an important day for India. This day is celebrated every year as Indian Army Day. January 15 is the day of honouring the soldiers who protect the border and enhance the pride of India. India’s 74th Army Day is being celebrated this year. Military parades, military exhibitions and other programs are organized at New Delhi and all Army Headquarters on January 15. On this occasion, the country remembers the courage of the Army, their bravery and their sacrifices. But the question is, why is the Indian Army Day celebrated on January 15 only? 

When is Indian Army Day Celebrated?

Indian Army Day 2022 is celebrated every January 15. On the occasion of Indian Army Day, the whole country remembers the bravery, bravery, indomitable courage, valour and sacrifice of the Army. This day is celebrated in honour of Field Marshal KM Cariappa. Born in Coorg, Karnataka, in 1899, Field Marshal Cariappa joined the British Indian Army at just 20. Cariappa retired from the Army in 1953. 

The East India Company formed the Indian Army in 1776 in Kolkata.

Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 by organizing military parades and other shows of strength in the Army Command Headquarters in Delhi and other parts of the country. On this day, the Army Day Parade is organized at Parade Ground in Delhi. This is the biggest event among all the programs of Army Day.

Why is this day special?

The Indian Army was formed in 1776 by the East India Company in Kolkata. The British commander occupied this Army before the country’s independence. When the country became independent in 1947, the Indian Army was headed by a British origin. About two years later, on January 15 1949, the last British Commander-in-Chief of independent India, General Francis Butcher, handed over the command of the Indian Army to Indian Lieutenant General KM Cariappa. He became the first Indian military commander of independent India. It is one of the most important events in the history of India. That is why January 15 is celebrated every year as Indian Army Day. One of the motives for celebrating Army Day is to salute all the martyrs who laid down their lives in the country’s defence and salute the soldiers engaged in its service.

Who is Lieutenant General KM Cariappa?

Before the country’s independence, the Army was occupied by the British commander. Even after the country’s independence in 1947, the Indian Army was headed of a British origin. In 1949, the last British Commander-in-Chief of independent India was General Francis Butcher. Indian Lieutenant General KM Cariappa replaced him. He was the first Indian military officer of independent India and led the Indian Army in the war between India and Pakistan. Later, Cariappa also became Field Marshal.

Achievements of Cariappa

Cariappa led the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. After retirement, he was given the rank of Field Marshal in 1986. Apart from this, he also received the Order of the British Empire for defeating the Japanese in Burma in the Second World War.

The Indian Army Day is a celebration of not only our brave soldiers but also the transfer of power from British rule to India. That is why each year, it is celebrated in all army command headquarters with great gusto and pride

According to the Global Fire Power Index 2017, India’s army is considered the world’s fourth strongest army. According to this index, America, Russia, and China have a better armies than India. India’s neighbour Pakistan is ranked 13th on this list.

So to respect them, we celebrate Indian army day every year. Last year, i.e. Indian army day 2021, was celebrated with great enthusiasm. The Indian Army 2022 theme is in stride with the future.
