The Indian government records the mass population and other aspects of the population by periodically conducting a regular census. Census is a process that helps track and record the population, percentage of literacy, work, establishment, birth and gender ratio of a particular place at a specific time. And almost every governing body of different countries conducts a census to record the population periodically or yearly.
In the census report, the government released the above data of each state and Union territory. Here, we will discuss Himachal Pradesh’s sex ratio according to the census of 2011.
What is the sex ratio?
The gender ratio is a part of the demographic data collected in a census. This measurement of gender ratio has huge popularity among anthropologists, sociologists and demographers. The sex ratio can be influenced by feticide, infanticide, gender-selective malnourishment etc.
The ideal gender ratio should be 1:1. In India, the gender ratio is counted by the number of females per 1000 males. According to the 2011 census, the average gender ratio was 940.
Here we will see the sex ratio of the state of the Himachal Pradesh in India.
Different types of sex ratios
The sex or gender ratio refers to the abundance and survival rate of any population’s male and female sexes. Generally, this ratio can be of 4 types. The primary sex ratio or gender ratio at fertilization. Then comes the secondary sex ratio, which refers to calculating this ratio at birth. The tertiary sex ratio is counted in adults, and finally, the quaternary sex ratio is the male/female ratio of people above reproductive age.
Theory of Ronald Fisher
The most notable theory about sex or gender ratio was propagated by the English biologist and Statistician Ronald Fisher in 1930. According to Fisher, gender ratio refers to the balance among sexes of a species that indicates its chances of survival; therefore, the ideal ratio of sex in any species should be 1:1
This ratio is often termed as Fisherian ratio, and many contemporary researchers still agree that this ratio is ideal for a stable population.

Sex ratio in Himachal Pradesh
The total population of Himachal Pradesh was 6,864,602 as per the 15th census of India in 2011, which translates to 0.57 per cent of the total population of the country. Out of this total number of the state population, 3,481,873 are male, and 3,382,729 are female. The gender ratio in Himachal Pradesh is 972 females per 1000 males. Conclusion
Indian government has conducted censuses since independence to track and record data about population, density, sex ratio, literacy, participation in work, and progress of different communities by States and Union territories. Census 2011 is the 15th census of India. As per this census, Himachal Pradesh has the sex ratio of 972 per 1000 males. Also, the growth rate of sex ratio significantly dropped from the previous statistics of 2001.
Two Panchayat localities in the Una district have an alarmingly low number of women per 1000 males, 111 and 167, respectively. The National Human Rights Commission sent a notice to the state in 2015 asking for an immediate probe and reports on the issue.
