Rashtrapati Bhavan- an overview

Rashtrapati Bhavan is the name which is famous among the people of India for the house of the President.

In India, as the preferred and the national language is Hindi, the President is commonly known as Rashtrapati.

As the President is of the highest position in the country and all the other leaders and the countrymen come after him, he is given the utmost respect among all the leaders.

He is given the topmost facilities as well the special security to protect him and his honour.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan is not just any ordinary building that is present in the country but has several rules and regulations that need to be followed. One cannot enter the premises of Rashtrapati Bhavan whenever one will too. Special permission and a letter are required to meet the president.

History of Rashtrapati Bhavan

New Delhi is the capital city of the country and holds great political importance, too, as the buildings of national importance are located here. Rashtrapati Bhavan is one such building.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan is the new name given to the residence of the Supreme President. The monument was called Government House before. At the time of the building, it was named the Viceroy’s house. After several changes in the building, the name was later named The Rashtrapati Bhavan as Rashtrapati in Hindi means the President and  Bhavan means residence.  Till 1947, the name for the President’s House was Viceroy’s House. Later on, the name was changed to Government  House in the year 1947. From 1947-to 1950, the name remained the same. However, after that, the name was changed to Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was easier for the people to understand.

Rajpath, New Delhi is the area where the Rashtrapati Bhavan is located in the capital of India.

It is a 340 room building that consists of the main entrance and the office of the President. It also has the reception halls,  guest rooms and offices. These are also known as the mansion because it is built on a very large area of land. The building is spread over an area of 130 hectares or 320 acres. This entire land is also known as the Presidential Estate. It is a building that has all the sources and facilities for all the daily utilities. The building is home to the beautiful large presidential gardens and open area of common spaces. It also has a house for the bodyguards, staff and the members who work there. All the materials needed for the utilities are present there.

The construction of the Rashtrapati Bhavan goes back to the year 1912, when the construction began under the able guidance of Sir. Edward Lutyens. The construction got completed in 1929, but it was only opened in the year 1931.

As the Presidential Estate is spread over a whopping area, it is referred to as the largest area of residence for any head or President of any country across the globe.

Currently, it houses the President of India, Mr Ram Nath Kovind. The first lady of India or the wife of the current president of India is Mrs Savita Kovind

Sir Edward Lutyens designed the Rashtrapati Bhavan keeping in mind the magnificence of India and the colours which are a part of India’s heritage.

The design of the Rashtrapati Bhavan was sent to Herbert Baker by Sir Edward Lutyens in Shimla on June 14. The design was approved, and the exact building was constructed. The design by Edward Lutyens had the components of Indian touch, colours and the Influence of Indian Architecture is also seen.

Lutyens and Baker started working on it as partners. But later, a dispute broke out between them due to the difference in design. Baker had a different design in the elevation, but Lutyens had a different view. Lutyens wanted it to be on the higher elevated side, but it was opposed. The front view of the building had an obtuse high angle to the road, but Lutyens opposed it. This led to their disagreement.

Conclusion 

The building is of great importance as it houses the President of India. Special forces are given the task of security. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is built on large land, and the President of India lives there till he has to serve the Government of India.
