When did Ganganagar Sugar Mill start making sugar from sugar beets?

In the 1950s, the sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) was developed in India. Indian Institute of Sugar beets Research, Lucknow, India, conducted exploratory experiments for root and seed crops around the country & identified suitable areas. Sugarbeet is being produced in the lowlands of the northern direction of India during the rabi season for its roots, which has close to 13–15 percent sugar, and the seeds crop being cultivated all over the hills over 5,000 feet.

In 1971, the ICAR initiated an All India Coordinated Project to conduct multi-location sugarbeet research, which coincided with the creation of a sugar mill in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. The entire factory and project had been in existence for about three decades, and the crop had a strong presence in that place. However, no new establishment of a sugar mill with the extra machinery needed to have sugar beet was built in the vicinity, therefore there was no expansion. The scenario has been complicated by the lack of a government incentive program to encourage the establishment of washing, cutting, and dispersion plants in existing sugarcane facilities.

The contemporary situation is similar, with the exception of opportunities to produce ethanol from sugar beet. It was made more aware that the Indian sugar industry is becoming more conscious of sugar beet cultivation’s viability. The lack of a market is the primary cause behind sugarbeet’s commercial failure. The sugar business has not received any seed money for implementing the supplementary machinery because it is an industrial crop. The work done at IISR has proven that sugar beet is an agriculturally viable crop in the country. In subtropical and tropical India, sugar beet varieties, machinery, agronomy, and crop protection know-hows have all been developed. Since 1976, the IISR has maintained sugarbeet germplasm and minimal germinating seeds at its breeding station at IVRI, Mukteswar.
