What is the Ministry of commerce and industry?
In 1921, the Indian government established a special department of commerce. Previously, the Ministry of commerce and industry handled the matter under the Department (set up in 1905).
When the Ministry of Industry and Labour was split into the Department of Communication and the Department of Employment in 1937, the Department of Commerce took on some of the Department of Industries’ responsibilities. However, in 1943, these responsibilities were shifted to the newly formed Department of Industries & Civil Supplies.
Following independence, the Department of Commerce has redesignated the Ministry of Commerce. The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Supplies was placed under a Cabinet minister’s leadership. The two Ministries were combined in February 1951 to form the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. This structure lasted for five years after the Ministry of commerce and industry was split into two separate Ministries, the Ministry of Commerce & Consumers Industry and the Minister of Industries, in September 1956.
The 2 Ministries were reunited once more in April 1957 to form the Minister of Industry and Commerce. Furthermore, the new Ministry took over the bulk of the former Ministry’s public initiatives.
In April 1957, the two Ministries were once again united to establish the Ministry of commerce and industry. The new Ministry also assumed responsibility for most of the public projects previously handled by the Department of Production, which had been dissolved in 1957.
In 1958, the Ministry of Finance moved the Directorate of Company Law Administration to the Ministry of commerce and industry, later reorganised into three divisions: Industry, Commerce, and Company Law Administration.
The Directorate of Supply was terminated in August of 2000. The Department of Commerce was given responsibility for the acquisition and regulation of goods for Central Government Ministries, as well as the management of the Indian Supplying Service and Indian Examination Service cadres and the administration of DGS&D. Following this reform, the Ministry of commerce and industry was divided into two departments: Department of Industrial Policies and Promotion and Commerce Department.
What are the responsibilities of the Department of Commerce?
The Department of commerce seems to be the central Department in charge of formulating policies to increase the country’s exports of various commodities. The Department of commerce’s mission is to develop, regulate, and promote India’s trade and commerce by formulating appropriate international trade and commercial policies and enforcing their requirements.
The Department’s primary responsibility is to assist in constructing an enabling atmosphere and facilities that will allow international trade to expand at a faster pace. The Foreign Trade Policy, which offers the basic structure of a strategic plan to be pursued for export promotion and trade, is formulated, implemented, and monitored by the Department.
The Trade Strategy is evaluated regularly to integrate modifications required to address evolving economic circumstances in both the domestic and foreign economies. Aside from that, the Department is responsible for international and regional economic ties, government trading, Special Economic Zones, export promotion, trade facilitation, and the creation and regulation of specific export-oriented businesses and commodities.
