Dams in Chhattisgarh

There are forty-two dams in Chhattisgarh. These dams play a crucial role in irrigation, industrial development and the domestic sector.

There are various dams in Chhattisgarh which are helpful for farming.

Gangrel Dam, also known as the Ravishankar Sagar, is a dam in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is named after Ravishankar Shukla. In this case, it is built over the Mahanadi River. People in Chhattisgarh say that it is the longest Dam in the whole state. Sondur Dam is one of the major dams in Chhattisgarh.

Dams, Barrages, reservoirs, and canals are used for irrigation in Chhattisgarh. It’s done with 51 medium and big irrigation projects, and a few smaller ones are still in the works, but most of them are done.

Dhamtari, a district in the state of Chhattisgarh, has a lot of dams, like Ravishankar Water Dam or Gangrel Dam, that draw tourists from all over the state.

7 major dams in Chhattisgarh

1. Tandula Dam

Tandula Dam is in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The dam project began in 1910 when the Tandula and Sukha Nala rivers met. It was finished in 1921. Dam: The Dam holds water from 827.2 square miles (319.4 sq mi). The reservoir can hold 302.31 million cubic meters of water during a flood. The highest flood level is 333.415 meters (1,093.88 ft). The Dam provides drinking water to the Durg and Bhilai Nagar Nigam areas. It also meets the needs of the Bhilai Steel Plant, which makes steel.

2. Dudhawa Dam

Dudhawa Dam is in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. When the Dam was built, it took from 1953 to 1964. It is in the village of Dudhawa, which is 21 km from Sihawa and 29 km from Kanker. It is built across the Mahanadi river in the village. The Dam is 24.53 m high and 2,906.43 m long. As a whole, the Dam has a surface area of 625.27 km2. A rest house is on the right-hand side of this earth dam.

3. Gangrel Dam

Gangrel Dam, also known as the Ravishankar Sagar, is a dam in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is named after Ravishankar Shukla. In this case, it is built over the Mahanadi River. In Dhamtari, it is about 17 km from Dhamtari and 90 km from Raipur, so it’s in that area. People in Chhattisgarh say that it is the longest Dam in the whole state. Farmers can grow two crops each year thanks to the water from this Dam. It is also a major water source for Bhilai Steel Plant. The Dam can generate 10 MW of hydroelectric power.

4. Kherkatta Reservoir

One of the lakes in India is called the Kherkatta reservoir. It’s about 12 km (7.5 miles) north of Pakhanjore in Chhattisgarh state. The Dandakaranya Development Authority built it in 1958 as part of the Dandakaranya Project. It was meant to help refugees looking for a new place to live.

5. Murrum Silli Dam

A dam called Murrum Silli Dam or Babu Chhotelal Srivastava Dam comprises an earth-fill embankment. It is on the Sillari River, a tributary of the Mahanadi River in eastern India. During the British Raj, Madam Silli was in charge of the construction. She named the building after her. It is in the district of Chhattisgarh called Dhamtari. The Dam was built between 1914 and 1923. It is the first Dam in Asia to have siphon spillways, which allow water to drain away. Madamsilli is about 95 km from Raipur, so it’s not far from there. It is one of the best examples of architecture in the state of Chhattisgarh. Its main job is to water crops.

6. Sondur Dam

Sondur Dam is in Chhattisgarh. It was built across the Sonder River in 1988. The catchment area of the dam is around 518 km2.

7. Hasdeo Bango Dam

Hasdeo Bango Dam is a dam built across the Hasdeo river in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh in 1961 and 1962. It is the longest, widest Dam in Chhattisgarh and the first water project in Chhattisgarh that can be used for different things. It is about 70 km from Korba, in the Korba district. It has an area of 6,730 km2. It can make 120MW of electricity.
