Cities on the Banks of Rivers in India: An Overview

Many major and minor cities are located on the river banks in India due to multiple advantages like seamless access to water and a water transportation system. In addition to this, it has been seen that Cities on the river banks of india are rich in agriculture, flora, and fauna. If one analyses, it can be figured out that many civilizations have taken place in the cities located near rivers only. The city on a river bank has also experienced development in socio-economic geographical aspects. 

Enlisting the Indian Cities situated on the Major River Banks

1. Ganges (Ganga) River:

Ganges River, called Ganga in Hindi, is considered the great river in northern India. The river is worshipped all over India by Hindus as a goddess. The total length of the Ganga River is around 2,510 km. There are several cities on the banks of river ganga and these are listed below:

  • Haridwar: Haridwar, also called Haridwar city, is located in the northwestern part of Uttarakhand state, northern India. It is one of the cities on the banks of river ganga, between the boundary of the Himalayan foothills in the north and the Indo-Gangetic Plain in the south. 
  • Kanpur: Kanpur located in the state of Uttar Pradesh lies on the bank of the river Ganges (Ganga).
  • Patna: Patna located in the state of Bihar lies on the southern bank of the river Ganges (Ganga).
  • Varanasi: Varanasi, also called Banaras or Kashi, is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, northern India. This city is situated on the left bank of the Ganga River. 

2. Godavari River:

After Ganga, Godavari is the second longest and third largest river in India. The total length of this sacred river in central and southeastern India is about 910 miles. Following mentioned are some Indian cities located on the banks of the river Godavari:

  • Gangakhed: Gangakhed, located in the state of Maharashtra, India, lies on the banks of the river Godavari. This city is also referred to as Dakshin Kashi.
  • Nanded: Nanded is an Indian city located in the west-central part of the country and lies on the banks of the river Godavari. 
  • Nizamabad: Nizamabad, located in the state of Telangana lies on the banks of the river Godavari. It is Telangana in the Nizamabad district where the Godavari enters at Kandakurthy and joins with Manjira and Haridra rivers and forms Triveni Sangamam. 
  • Ramagundam: Ramagundam, located in Telangana state is situated on the banks of river Godavari and is famous for having one of the largest thermal stations in south India. 
  • Rajahmundry: It is through the west of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, where the river Godavari flows. 

2. Yamuna River:

The Yamuna, also called Jamuna, is the second-largest tributary being discharged by the river Ganga and it is the longest tributary in northern India. Here mentioned are some Indian cities located on the banks of river Yamuna. 

  • Agra: Agra, located in Uttar Pradesh lies on the banks of the river Yamuna. Taj Mahal in this city is also located on the banks of the river Yamuna. 
  • Mathura: Mathura, formerly known as Muttra city is located in the western Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. The city lies in the Ganga-Yamuna Doab, on the banks of the river Yamuna. 
  • Delhi: The capital of India, Delhi is located in the north-central part of the country and lies on the west banks of the river Yamuna. 

3. Mahanadi River:

Major River in East Central India, the Mahanadi drains an area of about 132,100 square kilometres and is 900 km in length. Here mentioned are some Indian cities located on the banks of the river:

  • Banki: Banki, located in the state of Odisha, India lies on the southern bank of the river Mahanadi. 
  • Cuttack: Cuttack, located in the state of Odisha, India lies between the rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi. This is the reason why the city is named Abhinab Baranasi. 
  • Sambalpur: Sambalpur in the state of Odisha, India is located on the banks of the river Mahanadi.

4. Brahmaputra River:

Brahmaputra River, also called Bengali Jamuna, is the major river of Central and South Asia. It flows around 1,800 miles from its source in the Himalayas covering the states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Bangladesh. Here mentioned are some Indian cities located on the banks of the river:

  • Guwahati: Guwahati, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India lies on the banks of the river Brahmaputra. 
  • Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh a city in the northeastern part of Assam state, India, is located in a valley along the banks of the Brahmaputra River.

India is a country where numerous rivers flow from different regions. Several cities in India are located on the banks of different rivers. The advantage for the cities lying on the banks of rivers is better access to the water for irrigation, water trade routes, industrial and household use, transportation systems, flourishing flora and fauna, rich in agriculture, and so on. In addition to this, it has been reported that cities situated on the river banks are much more civilised and developed.
