Uttar Pradesh, a state in north India, is one of the most populated states in the country. This state statistically ranks first in domestic tourist travel, as this state is a hub for numerous tourist and pilgrimage spots. In order to ease the commute, there are multiple domestic airports in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is also home to three of the world heritage sites, and thus, there also exist quite a few international airports in Uttar Pradesh too.
Airports are basically aerodromes having extended facilities. Most of these airports are for commercial transport. Airports consist of a runway, which is a landing area and taking-off area for planes and is accessible to them aerially. Apart from the connected utility buildings, most airports have facilities like terminals for passengers to get to their flight and board their flights. Check-in facilities, bag drop-offs, security checks, refreshments etc., are some of the facilities provided at an airport terminal. Domestic airports are the ones where only domestic travel which is within the country takes place. International airports, on the other hand, also permit international travel which is outside one’s own country.
While talking about international airports in Uttar Pradesh, the foundation of another international airport in Noida was recently laid, making Uttar Pradesh the state having the highest number of international airports in India. Up until 2021, Uttar Pradesh housed only two international airports in Lucknow (The Chaudhary Charan Singh airport) and Varanasi (Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport). Later Kushinagar Airport became functional in 2021, after its inaugural ceremony by our prime minister. Kushinagar international airport provides direct flights to South Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. The international airport in Ayodhya is about to begin its travels anytime this year, while the foundation of the fifth international airport has already set in.
The domestic airports in Uttar Pradesh are situated in Kanpur, Agra, Gorakhpur, Bareilly etc. Kanpur airport provides commercial flights domestically to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru etc. The Agra airport, apart from handling commercial flights, also works as a military base. At present, Uttar Pradesh has eight operational airports, whereas seven airstrips and 13 airports are under construction.
With the vast number of international airports in Uttar Pradesh and domestic airports in Uttar Pradesh, the state provides a very good connectivity to various other cities and countries, making Uttar Pradesh the most sough-after state for airport travel and to maintain and ensuring the Government’s commitment to give multimodal transport facilities without any interruption.
The airport code assigned by the International Air Transport Association or IATA is a geocode which is of three letters and is designated to many airports around the world. For example, the Uttar Pradesh airport code for Agra Airport assigned by IATA is AGR, for Allahabad, its IDX, for Ayodhya airport, it is FZD, for Varanasi International airport, it is VEBN, and the list goes on.
