The past continuous tense refers to actions or events that began in the past and were still going on when another event took place. The past continuous tense is generally used to describe the background in a story written in the past tense. For example, the sun was shining, and the flowers were glowing.

The sentences in the past continuous tense are constructed using the past tense of the main verb (was/were) + base of the main verb+ing.
