What is a material noun?

A material noun is a term to name anything physical. Material Nouns are the names of the materials or substances used to make things. This noun is also known as a material noun since nouns in this category are usually always materials such as fabric, metal, air, or gold. Thus, it is just the label given to numerous raw materials or components found in nature or perhaps the environment. Some of them have also originated from animals or plants due to the biodegradation process.

Some material nouns are used as countable nouns depending on the context, like the word Coffee. If we use it in a sentence like : “Please give me a coffe.” It refers to a particular cup of coffee. Since “coffee” is a material and at the same time, is used as a countable noun here, we have a countable material noun.

The above example proves that some countable nouns are material noun depending on how it is used in the sentence. Material nouns are common nouns because they indicate stuff rather than persons or locations.

Rules To Be Used For Material Noun

The rules you must remember while using material nouns in a sentence are

  1. Articles such as – a, an, or the, are not used with uncountable material nouns. For example, Water only boils at a temperature of 100°C.
  2. When material nouns are countable and denote sorts of material or exhibit helpful nature, articles like – a and an can be used with them. For example, I would like to eat a slice of mozzarella cheese.
  3. The words ‘the’ and ‘some’ can also be used in the following sentences: I saw there is some milk in the glass.
  4. Material nouns cannot be pluralized. For example, Air is always lighter than water.

How To Use Material Nouns In A Sentence?

Material nouns are usually written in capital letters when they appear at the beginning of a sentence; otherwise, they are written in small letters when they appear anywhere in the sentence.

Examples:

  • I eat bacon and eggs
  • Woollen clothes are used in the winter season
  • Fire burns
  • Honey is a healthy substitute for sugar
  • My mother gifted me a gold chain, but I would have liked rose gold better
  • The water is frozen
  • I prefer cotton dresses over jute

Types Of Material Noun

The below mentioned are a few common types found in things around us.

  1. Material nouns found in nature, for example, water, salt, gold, diamond, so on.
  2. Material nouns found from animals, for example, honey, silk, eggs, milk, so on.
  3. Material nouns found from plants, for example, tea, coffee, perfume, cocoa, rubber, so on.
  4. Material nouns made by man, for example, bread, cheese, clothes, bricks, cement, so on.

Examples Of Material Nouns

  • On the ground, the youngsters are playing marbles
  • Chlorine is used to clean the swimming pool water
  • Brass is an alloy of many materials
  • Because of the mountains and trees, it typically rains here
  • The principal guest presented the man of the match with a golden bat
  • Every day, my mother feeds me two eggs
  • I’m wearing a silk dress
  • In the winter, we wear woollen clothing
  • We should avoid eating red meat
  • Honey should be consumed by children on a daily basis
  • I exclusively drink goat’s milk
  • My father is dressed in a leather jacket

Conclusion

A material noun by definition is a noun that represents a thing or a matter. It is a name given to something that is both tangible or intangible. For example, the ring can be made of silver or gold; in this sentence, the ring is a tangible material that can be made of either gold or silver, gold and silver are the material nouns. Again, in the sentence, we need oxygen to survive, oxygen is not tangible but is an ingredient for us to survive, thus forming a material noun.

Material nouns can be countable as well as uncountable, for example, a slice of cheese – here, cheese is countable, Water boils vigorously after 100 degrees celsius – here, water is uncountable.

Ans. The material noun denotes to matter, material, or substance used to make something. For example, gold, milk, and so on. A term used to describe anything that is not solid or physically present, but rather a concept, a sensation, a condition, or an action. For example, youth, attractiveness, honesty, and so on.

Ans. A noun is a term that is used to name something. For example, it might be the name of someone, a location, an object, a substance, or even a sensation. The noun has five types: Abstract noun, Material noun, Common noun, Proper noun, and Collective noun.

Ans. Material nouns are not always countable. It implies that some them cannot be counted since they are liquid, semi-liquid, or solid. These elements or matter cannot be counted, for example, honey; you cannot count honey. Although you can measure honey, it is not the same as counting it. In case of biscuit, however, you can ask to give you a biscuit. This way, it become countable at times.

Ans. Oxygen is a common noun as well as a material noun. For example, humans need oxygen to breathe. Here oxygen is describing a common phenomenon.  And the air is a common noun since it does not relate to a specific element but rather to the environment that surrounds us all. Because it is made up of chemical ingredients, it is a material noun by definition.
