Prepositions and articles are important in the English language. Today, we will be working on tasks. So get your pencils out and let's begin.

Introduction: What Are Prepositions?

Let’s do a recap. Prepositions are one of the eight parts of speech in the English language. They point out the direction of objects and people. Examples of prepositions are: on, in, under, above, below, at, over, between, besides, across, against, into, through, for, within, without, off, near, with, in addition to, in front of, from, beneath, underneath, till, besides, amid, upon, except, beyond, betwixt, during, around, about, since, along with and so on.

Rules Of Preposition

There are some rules you need to follow when using prepositions to make them grammatically correct. They are:

Prepositions must have an object. For example, the book is on the table. The preposition is on while the object is the table.

It must be placed before an object. In the example above, one comes before the table.

A verb cannot be a preposition.

Verbs in the infinitive form are not prepositions. For example, the ‘to’ in ‘to be’ is not a preposition.

What Are Articles?

Articles are words that point out or indicate nouns and noun phrases. In English grammar, there are two types of articles. They are:

Definite article: this article points out a definite object or person. It can be used for countable and uncountable nouns. They are also used before articles that begin with a vowel and consonants. The definite article is, ‘The’. For example, the man is my father.

Indefinite article: this article points to non-specific objects or people that we may not know. They are only used for countable nouns. The two articles are a and an. A is used before words beginning with a consonant. For example, a car, a chef, a necklace, a bed. An is used before words beginning with a vowel. For example, an umbrella, an orange, an apple, an antelope, an antenna, an animal.
