Essay writing and paragraph writing play a vital role in any type of literature. They are significant parts of written expression and communication of a message, argument, or opinion to a wider audience. Their success depends on the context and the content of the written piece. The utility of essay writing in English is manifold since it helps the academic, creative and professional performance of individuals across the world.

Difference between an essay and a paragraph

An essay is in-depth writing which deals with a broad theme and presents it in form of a story, narration, description, or argument. A paragraph is a short writing piece where a single and precise argument is presented in a short writing format. An essay contains several paragraphs. So, paragraph writing is important to learn before essay writing. However, both have an introduction and a conclusion with the argument or the message in between.

Different types of essay

Narrative Essay Writing

This type of essay writing takes creativity and a smooth flow of language. They should be easy to read, flow like a story, and will communicate a message to the reader. It may be creative or academic. Sound knowledge of the English language and literature is needed for this type of essay writing in English.

Descriptive Essay Writing

This type of essay writing is based on providing a description of the event, object, theme, or experiment, personal, academic, or professional experience, and so on. Here personal opinion, outlook, or subjective engagement should be kept at a minimum and the focus should be on objectivity. Descriptive writing is easier to muster with a bit of research and practice.

Causal Essay Writing

This type of essay writing needs a presentation of the cause and effect relationship and it needs to explain the cause, the effect, and the event in detail. It may deal with realistic situations, events, or some hypothetical scenario.

Argumentative Essay Writing

This type of essay writing is based on an argument. They should put forward the argument in the thematic pattern. The essay should be divided into paragraphs and each paragraph should present either separate arguments or the components of a similar argument.

Expository Essay Writing

This type of essay writing is based on the explanation and presentation of an event, an argument, an opinion in one’s own language and perspective. This needs a balance between an objective and subjective understanding of the topic and an engagement of the writer.

Critical Essay Writing

This type of essay writing needs evaluation and assessment from the perspective of the writer. They are supposed to write on the original topic and then look at it from a critical perspective.

Reflective Essay Writing

This type of essay writing takes personal engagement and subjective interaction with the theme and the personal opinion, thought and outlook of the writer come into focus.

Review Essay Writing

This type of essay writing is based on the review of some artwork, literature, scientific experiment, an event, a situation, etc.

Writing a good essay takes practice, patience, and time. The research is the longest period of engagement for the writer. The writing style, editing, and finish also take considerable time and effort. Paragraph writing is much easier and it should be practiced and perfected before essay writing. So, for good quality essay writing one should start with paragraph writing and after they have perfected the skill, they can focus on essay writing, including essay writing in English.

The essay writing for a creative domain can be used to narrate a story and put forward a social, political, or cultural message.
