There was once a Brahmin who lived with his wife in a beautiful little village in a far-off land. The Brahmin and his wife were respected in the village and everyone loved them, but they were unhappy as they were childless. They prayed and offered sacrifices to the Hindu goddess Kali daily so that they might be blessed with a child. After a lot of praying the woman finally had a child. But the child was a dog. Seeing this couple became shocked and all their friends and family advised them to abandon the dog. However, she refused to listen to her family and friends and raised the dog as her son. She loved him more than anything else. She cared for him and nurtured him with love as well as affection. She bathed him every day and provided him with the best food that she could find. She made a beautiful bed with a box and soft woolly material and let him sleep there. Slowly the dog grew up over the years. His mother’s love for him also increased as he grew up. Once there was a wedding in the neighbourhood which made her think about the wedding of her son. This raised the question as to what woman will marry a dog. However, the mother never gave up hope.
