English comprehension is an important topic in many of the competitive exams as well as the recruitment tests that tests one’s reading, writing and comprehending skills.

Introduction

English comprehension is an important topic in many of the competitive exams as well as the recruitment tests. Before one prepares to read, learn, and answer an English comprehension, he or she must understand what an English comprehension is. In this context, improvement in one’s reading skills, difficulty level of the comprehensions as well as its importance concerning different types of exams needs to be thoroughly studied. Further, some other aspects such as how much time is needed to prepare for an English comprehension and how much planning is needed are also vital.

English Comprehension

English comprehension is an important topic of many competitive exams including banking exams. This topic is very easy to answer and one can easily improve their speed of reading as well as monitoring time to attempt for the passages of English Comprehension. An unseen passage of English comprehension followed by 5 – 6 questions should only take about 15 minutes to answer. There are some basic steps which, if followed properly, can be answered properly and timely.
  • Recognize the particular English vocabulary
  • Continuation of a constant thought flow within the passage
  • Reading properly to understand the inner meaning
  • To reach a decisive and correct answer option for the question given on the passage of English comprehension

Reading Comprehension

The Questions and Answers section in reading comprehension is the highest scoring part within the section of verbal ability for different competitive exams. However, these questions can sometimes be tricky. Verbal ability along with reading comprehension comprises a separate section for different Government Exams such as Insurance, RRB, Bank, SSC, etc. Thus it is vital that students who are preparing for these exams carefully practice reading comprehension questions as well as answers properly.  This will help them in obtaining efficiency and answering the different questions with absolute accuracy. Thus it will help in increasing their overall scores. In the following section, a reading comprehension passage and some questions based on it, as well as their answers have been provided.

Comprehension Passages 

There was once a Brahmin who lived with his wife in a beautiful little village in a far-off land. The Brahmin and his wife were respected in the village and everyone loved them, but they were unhappy as they were childless. They prayed and offered sacrifices to the Hindu goddess Kali daily so that they might be blessed with a child. After a lot of praying the woman finally had a child. But the child was a dog. Seeing this couple became shocked and all their friends and family advised them to abandon the dog. However, she refused to listen to her family and friends and raised the dog as her son. She loved him more than anything else. She cared for him and nurtured him with love as well as affection. She bathed him every day and provided him with the best food that she could find. She made a beautiful bed with a box and soft woolly material and let him sleep there. Slowly the dog grew up over the years. His mother’s love for him also increased as he grew up. Once there was a wedding in the neighbourhood which made her think about the wedding of her son. This raised the question as to what woman will marry a dog. However, the mother never gave up hope.

The Brahmin and his wife lived in a village far away.
  • Which Hindu god or goddess did the Brahmin and his wife pray to for the child?
The Brahmin and his wife prayed to the Hindu goddess Kali.

  3. The Brahmin and his wife couldn’t have a child for a long time. – True

Conclusion

It is useful to learn about the importance of English comprehension and how to answer the questions based on different topics. One should follow a regular reading habit to enrich his or her vocabulary. Reading comprehension along with verbal ability skills is a scoring aspect in different government exams such as banking. It is with regular practice, one would be able to read and answer the questions quickly.
