What is a common noun? How can one identify a common noun? Learn everything about common noun definition and common noun examples.

The most common word used in English grammar is nouns. A noun refers to a person’s name, place, concept, or thing. Several kinds of nouns are used to depict things, place and people in day-to-day lives in both spoken and written language. If someone is indoors, they may see a desk, wall, trash can, window, or any set of different things. On the contrary, from an outdoor view, people may see other people, trees, animals, smartphones, etc. Every word that refers to such things, that are not gender-specific and common, are considered as common nouns.

Learn everything about Common Noun Definitions with examples

In general, a common noun is used to indicate a type of concept or object that is common. For example, is we say, A star is seen in the sky. The word star refers to a common noun, applied to indicate not a particular star but any star that is visible in the night sky. However, the Sun refers to a proper noun utilized to express the definite star which belongs to the core of the solar system. All the things that can be categorized as general will be classified as common nouns. Let us observe some more of the instances of common nouns. Occupation- Cricket player, doctor, painter, photographer, nurse, lawyer are considered common nouns. People-To describe in a generalised way, the word people is used as a common noun. Also, common nouns can indicate people by using words such as teacher, student, officer, sister, cousin, grandfather, brother, mother, police, girl, boy, person, etc. Non-living things- Some examples are- Bed, Towel, Sword, Stone, Chalk, Table, Bottle, etc.

Common noun identification steps

Considering the rules mentioned above, it must be very easy to identify a common noun. But, there are some tricky cases: Lets’s consider Eg.1. Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao welecomed President Ram Nath Kovind to Falaknuma Palace. Eg. 2. Barack Obama visited several queens and prestigious palaces during his term as the US president. In the first sentence, Chandrashekar Rao, Falaknuma Palace, and President Kovind are considered proper nouns. Those are specific names for a particular person. In the next sentence, queens, presidents, and palaces are considered common nouns. Queens or palaces refer to queens or palaces in common, and the president depicts the job name and not the particular person. The job titles or general names refer to the type of common nouns such as actor, truck driver, secretary, sergeant, and attorney. However, if these emerge as specific names or titiles conferred on a particular person, those often refer to proper nouns for examples above. Generally, this refers to the words that became capitalized when positioned directly ahead of that people’s name:
  • Attorney General KK Venugopal was allocated by the President

Common Noun Examples

The succeeding common noun examples will assist to investigate common nouns in detail. In the following sentences, common noun instances are underlined. Following that, the proper noun examples are mentioned of the same variety to recognize them clearer. Common Noun: Gita lost my favorite cup. Proper Noun: Seema can’t believe that Gita lost her Snoopy cup. Common Noun: Ram wants a new pair of trousers. Proper Noun: Ram wants to purchase a fresh pair of Raymond. Common Noun: Lolita has forgotten the name of the painter. Proper Noun: I appreciate paintings by Van Gogh. Common Noun: They’re waiting for me at the coffee shop. Proper Noun: Everyone else is at Domino’s Pizza.

Distinguish between a common noun and a proper noun

There are mainly five categories of nouns among which common nouns and proper nouns. Are of the most importance A common noun refers to classifying something in general and a proper noun means a particular manner of categorizing something such as the term dog refers to a common noun but the name of the dog Fido is considered a proper noun.

A common noun illustrates a noun that indicates any type of general entity but not specific.   • There is no way to become a perfect mother.

In the above-mentioned sentence, the mother is used as a common noun as it denotes a general term. 

Ans : Generally, common nouns are written in lowercase but a common noun can be capitalized while starting the sentence. Though, it is a bit tricky to use the common noun in capitalized form. Let us see an example where a common noun is capitalized. For example, I am inviting Mother Thomson for dinner.

Although mother is generally used in small letters but here, Mother is used as a name or designation or a title. 

Ans : The Answer is A/an. Eg- Orange is her favourite fruit. Here, orange is a proper noun as this particularises the girl’s choice of favourite fruit. Again, I have bought an orange. Using “an” before the noun in this sentence, the proper noun of the former sentence has become a common noun.
