Understanding the functions of a web browser

What do you understand by a web browser? A web browser extracts or retrieves information from the World Wide Web, is a web page that takes you anywhere on the internet.

A web browser is a software program that takes you anywhere on the internet; it extracts or retrieves information from the World Wide Web and presents it on your mobile device or computer. World Wide Web, also known as www, is a collection of web pages or websites stored on servers and connected through the local computers via the internet. Browsers translate web pages and websites into human-readable content using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). Every webpage has an online address called URL (Uniform Resource Locator). A web page collection belonging to a specific URL is called a website. Websites can make Internet surfing easy. 

What is the Worldwide Web?

World Wide Web, also known as www, is a collection of web pages or websites stored on servers and connected through the local computers via the internet. These web pages or websites can contain digital images, audio and video, text pages etc. Through the Internet, users can access these websites from any part of the world by entering the address of a particular website through their devices connected to the Internet like smartphones, computers, laptops etc. 

Functions of the web browser

A web browser, also known as a browser, is an application or software. The main function of a web browser is to allow us to access websites available on the internet. Some of the web browsers are Google Chrome and Apple safari. Web browsers are mainly used to access and display websites on the internet. The primary function of a web browser is to render HTML (Hypertext markup language). HTML is a code used to design all web pages, giving each website a specific address. Netscape Navigator and Mosaic were the first web browsers. 

Internet surfing  

Internet surfing means seeking information from the web pages or websites available on the servers. To surf the internet, we need a web browser; it is software used to access the information on the server. They can retrieve information from the World Wide Web. Some web browsers are Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, etc. 

How to open multiple web pages

Instead of searching web pages repeatedly to gather information from different websites, Multiple web pages can be opened simultaneously to save time. Thankfully there are many ways available to open multiple web pages.

Some of the ways are listed below-

1 Using the bookmark method in google chrome

  • Open all those websites you want to open

  • Now press CTRL+Shift+D on your keyboard to add those websites to a bookmark.

  • Enter the name of your choice and then choose the bookmark bar and tap to save.

  • Now you will see a folder of bookmarks you have just created.

An easy way to surf the internet 

Nowadays, we can subscribe to different content on the Web. For example, we can subscribe to an email newsletter, our favourite creators on YouTube, and notifications from the news websites are one click away. By doing this now, you don’t have to search for the latest news or funny videos; you just get notified by the notifications sent by those applications or web pages. Here, multiple web pages can be opened at the same time.

Privacy

These days privacy is an important part of our life; we don’t want to share our personal information with everyone.

All web browsers come with a feature of History that tracks how many times you visited a website, how many websites, at which time and from which device. In some cases, this can be useful, but we don’t want someone to look at our history. To avoid this, you can have a VPN (Virtual Private Network), incognito mode etc.; these features don’t allow the web browsers to record your history and location so that you can surf easily. You can also retrieve information from the World Wide Web. 

You can use VPN when connected through public wifi because public wifi has a higher risk of leaking your data; by using VPN, you can use the wifi anonymously. 

The incognito mode, which is available in most web browsers, blocks the browser from saving your history; you can use this when you are using a public computer and using your friends or someone else’s device.
