Mouse: Pointing device

The mouse is a pointing device in a computer. It is generally used for pointing to various tasks on the monitor. The mouse has two-dimensional motions on the surface that allows a smooth control of a graphical user interface in a computer. A mouse controls the pointer motion in two dimensions in a “graphic user interface” (GUI). The mouse controlled the movement of the hand equally forward and backwards. A mouse is used for pointing to various things such as files, folders, icons, actions or programs,

  • Point: The motion of the pointer needs to be selected on a specific object that the user wants to perform. A mouse is named after the “pointing device” for this act of pointing. Likewise, the act of pressing and releasing the button is called “pointing”.
  • Drag: Drag means pressing and holding the mouse button and moving it before releasing it. It is often used to copy or move files or other different objects through drag and drop. For example, drag can be used for selecting drawings and text in graphic applications.
  • Scroll: Scrolling is used to change the view of the computer screen by moving graphics that are displayed left and right or up and down. Scrolling can also be done using the scroll bars located on the right side or at the bottom of the window. The mouse’s position needs to be placed over the scroll bar (for instance, the scroll bar is on the left); the left mouse button needs to be held down and moved in a downward motion. This would enable the view down. Nowadays, every mouse has a scroll button with it. The scroll wheel presented in it is used for scrolling the view up and down.
