Characteristics of Computer Storage Devices

When a computer memory loses its data due to a power outage, it is considered “volatile memory.” The term “volatile” refers to something that is constantly changing or unstable. Other items must be aided for the situation to remain steady. Volatility here refers to the capacity to store data with or without electricity in the case of memory. Without electricity, volatile memory is unable to preserve data. Capacitors are used primarily in the development of volatile memory. As a result, memory access time becomes both quicker and less expensive.

Volatile memory

“Volatile memory” refers to computer memory that loses its data due to a power loss. This form of memory is the quickest on current computers; thus, applications, especially operating systems, tend to use it. “Random access memory” is the abbreviation for “random access memory.” The bulk of RAM (random access memory) used for main storage in personal computers is volatile memory. Other forms of computer storage, such as a hard drive or portable media, are slower to read and write than RAM. On the other hand, the data in RAM is only available while the machine is powered on; after that, RAM is exhausted.

CD-R is a recordable disc that we can only write once, but CD-RW is a rewritable disc we can use to write several times. So, they are readable, writeable, and rewritable storage devices.
