As technology advances, so too does the language used to describe it. If you’re not familiar with all of the major terms in computer, you could be left behind. In this article, we will define and explain some of the most important computer terms that you need to know. By understanding these terms, you’ll be able to communicate more effectively with tech-savvy individuals and stay up-to-date on the latest technological advancements.

What are the computer and computer language?

A computer is a programmable machine. The first computers were created in the early 1800s, and they could only be used by mathematicians and scientists. In 1836, a machine named, Analytical Engine was developed by Charles Babbage that had the ability to perform any calculation by programming it, that could be calculated by hand. However, the machine was never completed. In 1843, Ada Lovelace, who was Babbage’s collaborator, wrote the first algorithm intended to be run on a computer.

A computer language is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. To understand the computer language you need to know some important computer terms. Lets’ know them.

Important computer terms

A list of common terms in computers is CPU, hard-disk drive, floppy disk, RAM, BIT, ROM, secondary storage, database, motherboard, graphical user interface, hand pointer, operating system, hardware, input/ output devices, syntax, structured data, and code.

CPU:  This is the abbreviation for the central processing unit. It is a single chip that contains the circuitry necessary to carry out all the instructions from a software program.

Hard-disk drive:  This is a device that permanently stores digital data on a spinning disk. The faster the disks spin, the quicker the data can be accessed.

Floppy disk:  This is a removable storage medium that was once popular but has been largely replaced by USB flash drives and optical discs.

RAM:  This stands for random access memory, and it is the type of memory that a computer uses to carry out its operations.

BIT:  This is the smallest unit of information that a computer can store.

ROM:  This stands for read-only memory, and it is a type of memory that can be used only to store data.

Secondary storage:  This term refers to any type of storage device that is not the primary storage of a computer.

Database:  A database is a collection of information that can be accessed by computers.

Motherboard:  The motherboard is the main circuit board in a computer. It contains the CPU, RAM, and all the other important components.

Graphical user interface:  A graphical user interface is a type of interface that allows users to interact with computers using pictures and icons instead of text.

Hand pointer:  The hand pointer is the arrow that appears on the screen when you move the mouse cursor over an item.

Operating system:  An operating system is a software that controls all the operations of a computer.

Hardware:   Hardware is the physical parts of a computer system, such as the CPU, RAM, and hard-disk drive.

Input/ output devices:  These are the devices that allow a computer to input data, such as the keyboard and mouse, and output data, such as the monitor and printer.

Syntax:  Syntax is the set of rules that govern the structure of a language.

Structured data:  Structured data is data that is organized in a specific way.

Code:  Code is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do.

These are some of the important computer terms that are used generally in computer languages. Apart from these terms, there are computer science terms that are used in the tech industry.

Computer science terms used in the tech industry

Some of the famous computer science terms used in the tech industry are big data, cloud storage, cyber security, and agile development.

Big data:   This is a term used to describe the large volume of data that is being generated by businesses and organizations.

Cloud storage:  Cloud storage is a method of storing data on remote servers rather than on local devices.

Cyber security:  Cyber security is the practice of protecting computers and networks from attacks by unauthorized users.

Agile development:  Agile development is a method of software development that emphasizes collaboration and flexibility.

These are some of the common computer science terms that are used in the tech industry that you need to know.

Conclusion

Nowadays computer has become one of the most important tools in our lives. It would be hard to imagine our life without computers. That is why you need to know at least the basic terms in computer. By knowing these terms, you will be able to use the computer more efficiently and effectively. Computer science is a vast and ever-growing field, and it’s important to have a basic understanding of the terminology used to communicate in the tech industry.
