In the GATE 2004 question, can we use this logic that as the partition is removed, the gas will diffuse into the entire container and so will expand and as expansion reduces temperature, so the final temperature will be less than 298K ??

No. It is equal to 298. That is the concept of adiabatic mixing

okay mam.
The answer for gate 2004 question is wrong. It will be less than 298K. Here the nothoing is told about piston. (moves freely, frictionless, etc) therefore change in work not 0.
