Notes on Sovereign Nation

A nation is considered to be sovereign when it possesses a single, centralised government that possesses the authority to govern a particular geographical area.

According to the criteria established by international law, a sovereign nation is one that possesses a clearly delineated territory and only one central government. These states are able to establish diplomatic relations with other sovereign nations as a result of their permanent populations. Many smaller or less prominent nations are countries that are relatively unknown throughout the world, in contrast to the majority of major sovereign nations, which are well known throughout the world.

Sovereign Nation

It is extremely challenging to accurately count the number of independent nations that exist across the globe. In spite of the fact that the United Nations currently recognises 206 total states (193 member nations, two observer states, and 11 “other” states), there are also nearly a hundred additional regions that are considered sovereign nations by some sources but not by other sources. The United Nations recognises 206 total states (193 member nations, two observer states, and 11 “other” states). Unrecognized countries, disputed territories, dependent territories, autonomous regions, administrative areas, partially recognised territories, crown dependencies, and many other types of classifications and labels can be applied to these areas of the world. These geographical areas might or might not be regarded as sovereign. For instance, out of the 206 states that make up the United Nations, 15 of them have contested their own sovereignty. These regions range from Northern Cyprus, which is not very well known and has a population of approximately 400,000 people but only 3,355 km2 (1,295 mi²) of land area, all the way up to China, which is the most populous country on the planet:

15 Member States of the United Nations Whose Sovereignty is Controversial

  1. Georgia lays claim to the territory known as Abkhazia.
  2. Azerbaijan lays claim to the territory known as Artsakh.
  3. Taiwan has territorial claims over China (the People’s Republic of China), which are partially recognised internationally (the Republic of China)
  4. Turkey does not recognise Cyprus, officially known as the Republic of Cyprus.
  5. Israel, on the other hand, is only partially recognised. As of the end of the year 2019, 162 countries within the United Nations have acknowledged Israel as a sovereign nation.
  6. Kosovo is an area that Serbia asserts ownership over. As of March 2020, 115 countries in the United Nations have acknowledged Kosovo as an independent state. However, there have been some who, in response to political pressure, have either withdrawn their recognition or refused to confirm it.
  7. South Korea lays claim to the territory that makes up the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (also known as North Korea).
  8. The Cyprus government has staked its claim on Northern Cyprus, also known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus)
  9. Palestine is only partially recognised, and Israel contests its legitimacy as a state. 138 countries around the world have acknowledged Palestine as an independent state as of 2019.
  10. Morocco lays claim to the territory known as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
  11. Somalia lays claim to the territory known as Somaliland.
  12. North Korea lays claim to the territory that is now known as the Republic of Korea (South Korea).
  13. Georgia lays claim to the territory known as South Ossetia.
  14. The territory of Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, is contested by the People’s Republic of China on the Chinese mainland. As of the year 2019, only 14 of the UN’s member states have acknowledged Taiwan’s status as a sovereign nation, primarily as a result of China’s interference.
  15. Moldova lays claim to the territory known as Transnistria.

Countries All Over the World that are Completely Independent

As the preceding list demonstrates, the credibility of the information used to determine whether a state should be considered sovereign is highly variable. The government of Somaliland is of the opinion that the country can properly be referred to as a sovereign state. On the other hand, the government of Somalia, the country that contains Somaliland, is of the opinion that Somaliland is not an independent nation but rather a contested part of Somalia. Other instances are even more politically complex, such as both North and South Korea claiming to be the rightful government of a united Korea, or Taiwan claiming to be the rightful government of all of China, despite the fact that the previous Chinese government fled to Taiwan after a communist revolution took over mainland China after World War II.

Conclusion

As the preceding list demonstrates, the credibility of the information used to determine whether a state should be considered sovereign is highly variable. The government of Somaliland is of the opinion that the country can properly be referred to as a sovereign state. Our India has its own supreme law and is not a matter of any additional state or nation. In addition, India is unaffected by any kind of foreign intervention in its internal affairs, making it a truly independent nation.
