This Mosque has become one of the major landmarks and tourist attractions in Hyderabad because of its spiritual beauty. The present Masjid was built in the Qutub Shahi area in the foothills of Hyderabad on the banks of river Musi, which is also known as Burji Ganga. Later it became famous as Mecca.

History of the Mecca masjid

The history of Mecca Masjid is highly interesting. It is written on a stone plate in the Arabic language at the entrance of the Mosque; It was built during the 17th century by the sixth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. He laid the first foundation stone of the Mecca masjid.

Mecca Masjid Hyderabad was constructed by Nawab Mir Qutub-ud-Din Siddiq, the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad and is a famous personality. He built Mecca Masjid in parts of the Jahangir Puri  (Old Palace) after being ordered to build it by his grandson as a token of gratitude for his noble services. He also built its surrounding buildings and a road around the complex.

There are many places of worship in this complex like Masjid, Confessing Rooms, Madressah and a mosque for people to pray in every day (Sunni/Shafi).

The architecture of Mecca masjid

The building has four floors with a large dome that resembles the roof of the Kaaba (Mecca Masjid), the holiest place in Islam. Mosques are known as “Masjids”. The Masjid has a capacity of 10,000 worshippers. The top of the Mosque is about 250 ft across.

The dome of Mecca Masjid Hyderabad is decorated with fine mosaic arabesque decoration. The Mosque is also known for its architecture and ornamentation.

The Mosque was renovated in 2012 by Falaknuma Palace Heritage Hotels in collaboration with INTACH and CMRL after its stone walls were severely cracked in the 2011 year due to the weight of its dome (boot-shaped). The dome consists of Makkah (Mecca) sandstone, polished marble from Madinah (Saudi Arabia), and brass from Baghdad.

The building consists of four floors with a verandah surrounding three sides (east, north and south). At the centre of the eastern façade of the Mosque stands two high minarets which are placed on either side of the grand entrance known as “Pishtaq”, which means “archway”.

The Mosque is built in Indo-Islamic style. There are four minarets and four turrets on the eastern side, with a corner minaret in each corner.

There is a prayer hall on top of the Mosque. The prayer hall is known as “Masjid Magrib”, which means Mosque for Friday Prayers. There is a prayer room known as “Musallah”, where the Namaz-e-Janaza (prayer for the dead) is performed.

There are two Madrasas inside Mecca Masjid Hyderabad, Madrasa Hyderabad and Madrasa Nizamia; one for girls and one for boys. 

Inside Mecca Masjid Hyderabad, the entire structure comprises red bricks (granite) with marble work.
