Mass Percent Formula

Small Description: The mass percent method is a way of describing a concentration. It also represents a component in a certain composition.

“Mass percent” is a technique for representing the degree. It also describes the component that forms during some combination. The mass percentage of a solution is used to characterize the composition. It displays the amount of solute present in a given volume of solution. Solute solubility can be measured either in terms of moles or mass.

In accordance with mass %, the solution composition can be understood. It shows the amount of solute that is present in the solution volume which is given. The amount of the solute is measured in mass or moles.

Formula

Mass percent = (mass of the component ÷ total mass) x 100% or

Percentage of mass = (mass of the solute ÷ mass of solution) x 100%

Mass percent formula can be expressed when solving for the mass of all elements and molar mass present in one mole of the compound This is how the mass percent formula is expressed. With the masses, you can calculate the mass proportion of any element. The mass percent of a solution is calculated by dividing the grams of solute by the grams of solution and multiplying by 100 to get a percentage.

Mass is mostly given in grams, but then any standard measure would be sufficient until the component or the mass of the solute, and, thus, the total or mass of the solution are expressed in equivalent units. Mass percent is referred to as percent by weight or w/w%.

Steps for Finding Mass Percentage

Step 1: First define an equation that represents a compound’s mass percent. Mass percent of a compound is defined as:

mass percent = (mass of chemical÷total mass of compound) x 100. to define the value as a percentage.

Step 2: Next, find the total mass of the compounds. When you know the masses of all the present elements and compounds that are being combined, you simply add them to get the all over total mass of the final compound. Determine the mass of the chemical under consideration. When you are asked to find the “mass percent,” you look for the mass of a particular chemical as a percent of the overall mass. Then, note the mass of the chemical that is given in the question.

Step 3: Take care of the variables into the mass percentage equation. So, after you’ve determined the values for each variable, enter them into the equation.Determine the mass percentage. Now that the equation is complete, simply solve it to determine the mass. percentage. Divide the chemical’s mass by the total mass of the compound. Multiply it by 100. This may provide you with the chemical’s mass percentage.

Solved Examples

1. Calculate the grams of NaOCl (6.15% by mass) in 285 grams of a billboard bleach solution.

In this problem, the equation should be rearranged to account for the grams of solute.

We have Percentage of mass = (Solute’s mass/solution’s mass) x 100%

Gram of solute = (mass percent X gram of solution)/100

Gram of solute = (6.15 X 285) /100 = 17.52 grams.

Therefore, one gram of solute is 17.52 grams.

2. What is the mass percent of caustic soda, if 10 grams of it are dissolved in 100grams of water?

Total mass of compound= 10+ 100= 110 grams

We know that, mass percent= (mass of solute or chemical / total mass of compound) x 100

Mass percent of caustic soda= (10/110) x 100

Mass percent of caustic soda= 9.09%
