What is JEE Main Marks vs Percentile?

The JEE percentile score is not the same as the marks obtained by a candidate or the percentage. The percentile score compares the candidate’s performance with that of other candidates. It shows the percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular score in the examination. To be able to realize an estimated rank even before the official announcement can be useful, but knowing the normalization process and tiebreakers used to determine the JEE Main marks and percentile is important.

Why are the JEE Main Results Announced in the Percentile?

The JEE Main result and rank are determined on the basis of the percentile score secured after the normalization process. The percentile score indicated the percentage of candidates who either scored equal to or less than a specific percentile.

What is the JEE Main Percentile Score?

The JEE Main percentile score is based on the relative performance of the total number of candidates sitting for the examination. The percentile score does not denote the percentage of the marks obtained by the candidate. So, the topper of each session will be awarded the same percentile, i.e., the 100 percentile. The marks between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to an appropriate percentile.

JEE Main Normalization Process

Upon gathering raw marks, the NTA employs a normalization formula to derive percentile scores for each subject: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, as well as the total. The highest score within each session is assigned a perfect 100 percentile. Percentile scores are crucial for forming the JEE Main merit list. Calculations extend to seven decimal places to eliminate ties among candidates sharing identical scores. Conclusion The JEE Main results are released in the form of percentile scores. The percentile is reached by comparing the scores of candidates who have scored equal to or less than a specific percentile.
