Sentence Completion

In this article, we will learn the concept of sentence completion using grammar, vocabulary, and necessary strategies that help complete sentences and why they are required.

A collection of meaningful words that contains a subject, helping verb, a verb, and noun make a sentence complete. A sentence can be a question or an answer, a wish, expression, or statement. Sentence completion is a part of the process of getting a coherent expression. You will get an incomplete sentence with objectives or hints. Breaking the sentence into the subject, helping verbs, verbs, and nouns have gotten us so far; now, let’s divide a sentence based on its content and function words.

Content words include nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs.

Function words include articles demonstratives, processive, pronoun quantifiers, conjunctions, prepositions, auxiliary words, models, qualifiers, and question words.

Function words are also known as grammatical, form, or empty words. These words are used not as frequently as others, but they are the bricks that complete a sentence.

For example, metals are lustrous, whereas non-metals have no lustre.

Here Metals, Non-Metals, lustrous and Lustre are Content words.

And are, whereas, have, and no is Function words.

Like the tricks and shortcuts used in mathematics and reasoning, English grammar has its own rules and hacks. So, what makes a sentence completion test easy? Let’s discuss!

Deep knowledge of vocabulary

Try reading excerpts from English newspapers to enhance your vocabulary. Quote 10 new words in your diary and their meaning, synonym, antonym, and possible examples. Making this habit will surely make your vocabulary more extensive.

Good knowledge of verbs and tenses

A sentence is incomplete without a verb. With a working knowledge of verbs and tenses, sentence completion will become fun and easy.

Visualisation of a sentence

Try to find the meaning of each object in a given sentence. Read the sentence carefully. Focus on the verb and relate it to the objectives.

Positive and negative Indication

Each sentence has an indication. It can be a statement, question, answer, or expression. You must check the positive and negative indications in the sentence. Once you get the indication after cracking the word in a sentence, you will easily relate it to the objectives.

Use of hints

In many cases, an incomplete sentence is given with a hint. In that case, either the word or an appropriate verb will be similar. You can use the word in the blank area to relate it to the sentence.

Connecting words

These are the words that consist of helping verbs, conjunction, preposition, and pronouns like although, the end, over, still etc. We have already discussed the difference between content and connecting words in the previous paragraph. It will be easy to complete the sentence if you follow that pattern.

You can use sample papers and online sentence completion worksheets to practice such words.
