A Brief Note on Verbs

A verb is a term used as an action word. This article provides a detailed look at the concept of verbs. We will also learn about the verb forms and much more. We will also see some verb examples.

Verbs are the words that define what actions are done. Verbs are an essential part of speech. Every sentence has at least one verb in it, also referred to as action words. Verbs are also used to link the subject of a sentence to its object. Because verbs are crucial in communication, knowing how to use them effectively will significantly improve your speaking and writing. In this article, we will talk about the concept of verbs. Further, we will also read about the verb forms with their examples.

Verbs

As discussed above, verbs are action words. They are used to define an action in the sentence. Verbs are also used to express the state of the object. There are mainly two types of verbs:

  1. Main Verbs– They are also called normal verbs or lexical verbs.

Some examples of main verbs are:

  1. I painted the house. 
  2. She is reading her book.
  3. He is dancing.

2.Helping Verbs – They are also called auxiliary verbs. They are of two types. These two types are modal and non-modal verbs. They are also used to indicate negation in the sentence. These verbs are used in the continuous (progressive) and perfect tenses. They help the main verbs to complete the sentence. The auxiliary verb ‘Do’ is used for asking questions or expressing negations in the sentence. 

Some examples of auxiliary verbs are:

  1. Priya is going to the park.
  2. They are running in the garden.
  3.  iii. I have seen a picture.
  4. Do you drink coffee?
  5. Don’t waste your money.
  6. Please, do submit your articles.

Verb Forms

Verbs have six forms. These verb forms are listed below:

  • Base form: Base form is used to represent the present tense actions. It can be used in both singular and plural perspectives. An example of this form is: Children play on the ground.
  • Infinitive: When verbs in the base form are used with ‘to’ preceding them, then the verb is known to be infinitive. An example of this form is: Tell them not to play.
  • Past tense: When verbs refer to the actions done in the past, then they are used with ed. An example of this form is: They played cricket yesterday.
  • Present tense: When verbs refer to the actions done in the present, then this type of form is used. An example of this form is: I am playing with him today.
  • Gerund: In this form, the verbs are used in base form and ing. An example of this form is: Running is the best exercise.
  • Imperative: In this form, the verbs are used to give commands. An example of this form is: Lock the door.
