Wildlife officials recruited Irula tribesmen from Tamil Nadu to hunt the Burmese pythons believed to be decimating native mammals in the Everglades, a wetlands preserve in the southern tip of the U.S Irula is an ethnic group of India. They inhabit the area of the Nilgiri mountains, in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, India. A scheduled tribe, people of Irula ethnicity are called Irular, and speak Irula, which belongs to the Dravidian family Traditionally, the main occupation of the Irulas has been snake and rat catching. They also work as labours (coolies) in the fields of the landlords during the sowing and harvesting seasons or in the rice mills. Fishing is also a major occupation. Irula used to catch snakes including pythons for skin industry until 1975,when its trade was banned. Burmese pythons are one of the largest snakes in the world, reaching 20 feet in length. These natives of Indochina got loose in the vast wetland ecosystem of southern Florida, where the warm subtropical climate suited them fine. These pythons were responsible for decimating native mammal population and severe ecological distress .
