Critically analyse the progress of Smart city mission during the 2 years ? Smart City Mission envisaged for enhancing the living standards in cities was launched by Urban development ministry in 2015. The main aim is to enhance the ease of living and make our cities meet global standards. The progress so far is not much encouraging. Data from urban ministry shows our of total 730 projects sanctioned in cities selected so far only 24 have been completed. Data also shows that 49% for total projects are yet to be initiated. Some states like Rajasthan, Gujrat, Delhi have shown progress but, most other cities are still busy with finalising SCPs( proposals) and hiring PMCs ( Project management consultants). The main reason for delays according to ministry is a complex tender process in which not only lowest bidder but his capabilities are also being assessed to ensure the expertise to develop smart cities. The progress has also been delayed because of no definite outline given by ministry on what may be added to a smart city and its open to interpretation according to local needs. This however coupled with already overpopulated cities suffering with basic infrastructural deficiencies makes the goal of 100 such cities till 2022 a distant dream.
