Volume Formula

The term ‘volume’ relates to the quantity of tri-area covered by an element or a sealed outer layer. Volume is measured in cubic divisions such as m3, cm3, inches3, and so on.

  • Volume is simply a measure of the space occupied by any three-dimensional bulk material. Cube, cube shape, disk, cylinder or sphere are examples of solids

  • Volumes vary depending on the form

  • A solid’s volume is calculated in cubic units. If the measurements are delivered in metres, the volume will indeed be provided in cubic metres. This is the International System of Units’ conventional volume unit (SI). Other quantity units include cubic centimetres, cubic feet, cubic cm, and so on

Formula for Volume

  • The product of sizes is the method of calculating the volume of something like a solid in 3 dimensions. In general, volume equals the product of the shape area & its height

  • Volume equals Base Area x Height

  • The volume of shapes with flat roofs, including the cube as well as cuboid, is simple to calculate. However, for curved shapes such as cones, cylinders, & spheres, we must also take into account the measurements of the cylindrical shape, such as radius and diameter

The following table will show the formulas of Volume for different shapes

Geometrical shape name

Formula for volume

Cone

V = ⅓ πr2h

cube

V = a3

Sphere

V = 4/3 πr3

Prism

Base Area x Height

Cylinder

V = πr2

Hemisphere

⅔ (πr3

Pyramid

⅓ (Area of base) (Height)

Cuboid

V = length x width x height

Some solved questions on the volume

1. Find a cube volume if its side length is 6 cm.

Solution: Given, the length of the cube = 6cm

As it is known that,

The Volume of the cube equals the Side cube

Therefore,

The volume of a cube with 6cm length = 63 (cm)3

Volume = 216 cm3

2. What is the volume of the cone if the radius is 3cm and the height is 6cm?

So the Solution for the above question is as follows:

Given, that the radius of the circular base of the cone = 3cm

Height of cone = 6cm

And as we know,

Volume of a cone = ⅓ πr2h

Or Volume = ⅓ π (3)2 (6)

Or, Volume = ⅓ x 22/7 x 9 x 5

So the Volume = 47.1428 cu.cm.
