Brief National Integration Council:
The National Integration Council is a council of top politicians and public figures that seeks solutions to issues such as communalism, regionalism, casteism, and terrorism. National Integration Council was set up in October 1961 by the late Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.
This council seeks advice from prominent national leaders and recommends measures for reinforcing National Unity and Integrity. National Integration Council is a high-powered body that has Members of Parliament and National Leaders as its members. It focuses on the unity and integrity of the country.
National Integration Council’s main objective is to form National Policy for National Integration and Communal Harmony through collective consultation and consensus. National Integration Council meets twice a year, in the months of January and July. National Integration Council is chaired by the Prime Minister of India. The National Integration Council is an important body that looks into various issues related to National Integration and provides recommendations to the government.
The National Integration Council has its secretariat in the National Integration and Economic Council Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs. This was set up for national integration and communal harmony, National Integration Council has recommended various important policies for national integration and communal harmony.
Objectives of National Integration Council
Following are the objectives of the National Integration Council as enshrined in the National Integration Council Act, 1992:
– To promote national integration and to ensure that all citizens of India are united by a common national identity and have an equal stake in the development of the country
– To identify factors that are threatening National Integration, to suggest remedial measures and to advise the government on policies that would promote National Integration
– To review the progress made in the implementation of programmes aimed at promoting National Integration
– To advise the Central and State Governments on measures to be taken for the protection of minorities from any discrimination or violence
National Integration Council meetings
The National Integration Council first met on October 31, 1961, to discuss the socio-political issues of India. The National Integration Council gave recommendations for National Policy on National Integration in 1969.
National Integration Council formulated National Agenda for Governance on August 20, 2001. National Agenda for Governance was set to achieve National Integration and National Agenda for Governance is to make India a developed nation by 2020. National Agenda for Governance was adopted at the National Integration Council meeting held in Mumbai on August 20, 2001.
National Agenda for Governance was presented to the President of India by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 18, 2001.
