The Constituent Assembly of India was established in response to the Cabinet Mission’s proposals for drafting India’s constitution. It was created on December 6, 1946, and operated for nearly three years until dissolved on January 24, 1950. Members of India’s Constituent Assembly were chosen from all provincial assemblies using a single transferable vote proportional representation system. There were 389 elected members of the constituent assembly at the outset, with 292 representing states, 93 representing princely states, and four representing the provinces of Delhi, Coorg, Ajmer, and Baluchistan.
On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly had its inaugural meeting and elected Dr. Sachhidanand Sinha, the assembly’s oldest member, as provisional President.
The assembly elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as Chairman and Dr. H.C. Mukherjee as Vice President on December 11, 1946. B.N. Rau has been appointed to the position of constitutional adviser.
Members Of Constitution Assembly
- Diplomat and constitutional advisor B. N. Rau was a prominent member of the drafting committee.
- Jawaharlal Nehru was later chosen as India’s Prime Minister.
- In the first cabinet, Vallabh Bhai Patel served as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.
- B. R. Ambedkar, who later served as the first law minister, was the chairman of the drafting committee.
- Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad – became the first cabinet minister in charge of education.
- Rajendra Prasad was the country’s first president.
- C Rajagopalachari was the country’s first and last Governor-General.
- Sarat Chandra Bose is the elder brother of Subhash Chandra Bose, a lawyer and a liberation fighter.
- Krishna Sinha – subsequently served as Bihar’s first Chief Minister.
- Anugrah Narayan Sinha, often known as Bihar Vibhuti, was Bihar’s deputy chief minister and finance minister.

- Bihar Vibhuti, also known as Anugrah Narayan Sinha, was the deputy chief minister and finance minister of Bihar under N Gopalaswami Ayyangar and was influential in the creation and implementation of Article 370.
- Rafi Ahmad Kidwai was a socialist and an activist who eventually became the first cabinet minister for communication.

- Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the first Nehru cabinet’s Minister of Industries. Due to disputes with Nehru, he left the Congress and founded the Bhartiya Jan Sangh in 1951.
Constitution Assembly and Making of the Indian Constitution
- The Government Strategic Plan of May 1946 provided for the formation of the Constituent Assembly of India. Its mission was to draft a constitution or constitutions to facilitate the proper transition of sovereign power from British to Indian hands.
- Own kind legislatures and princely realms were to have proportional representation in the Assembly. The majority of these elections were completed by the end of July 1946, under the supervision of the Gov. General of The United States (Viceroy).
- Ludhiana and the North-West, Bengal-Assam, and the Rest of India were to be represented in the Assembly. The Constitutions for the Indian State, each Section, and each of the Provinces within it were to be drafted.
