India as a Sovereign State

The preamble explains India to be a Sovereign State, which means that India is an independent state and is free from external control and possesses internal and external sovereignty as the other independent countries like England, the USA, etc. India is free to formulate and direct its home and foreign policy and is free to conduct foreign relations as it wishes and desires. The ultimate and final power and authority reside in the Indian people. Some experts or critics question the claim of India of being a Sovereign State because of its membership in the Commonwealth of Nations because by doing so she has accepted the Queen of England as the head of the commonwealth. But this charge is baseless because: –

  1. The nature of the commonwealth of Nations has undergone a change because it is no longer termed the British Commonwealth, but it is an organization of free nations and is now named Common Wealth of Nations.

  2. Voluntarily India has joined this organization and when she wishes to withdraw its membership she can do so.

  3. India is a member of many other world organizations. It does not affect her sovereignty.

Conclusion

It is to conclude that a Sovereign State, as well as a Sovereign Country, has a centralized government. There are several characteristics of Sovereign States. 195 states all over the world are Sovereign States. The Sovereign State consists of a defined territory, a permanent population, the ability to form relations with the different Sovereign States, and a permanent population.
