The Government of West Bengal is the central governing authority of the West Bengal state. Like other states, the Governor is considered the head of the state and is appointed by the President of India. The Government of West Bengal consists of an executive, a judiciary, and a legislature. The Chief Minister is the head of the governing body and controls the executive power. All the operations of the West Bengal Government are controlled from the centralised place, which is presently known as Nabanna. The current Chief Minister of the Government of West Bengal is Mamata Banerjee. She is the founder and leader of the All India Trinamool Congress Party.

The Legislative Assembly of the Government of West Bengal is a unicameral type consisting of one house, and the people of West Bengal state directly elect the members. The house of Legislative Assembly is located in the BBD Bagh area of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. This is where major decisions concerning the welfare of the state are taken. In 2021, elections in the West Bengal legislative assembly took place for 292 constituencies. It was conducted in eight phases from 27 March to 29 April. The ruling party of the state, the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee, won the election by a considerable majority of votes.

  • Welfare and Health: The Government of West Bengal has provided comprehensive medical services to the people throughout the state. The government carries out various other welfare services that benefit orphans, the unemployed, and the poor.
  • Education: The Government of West Bengal encourages several colleges, universities, and other technical institutions. Among the pride of West Bengal in the education sector are the University of Calcutta (founded in 1857), Rabindra Bharati University (founded in 1962), and Jadavpur University (founded in 1955). In addition, one of the most famous international cultural relations centres – Vishva-Bharati University – is established in Bolpur in West Bengal.

  • Akanksha: It is considered one of the most important West Bengal Government schemes related to housing for government employees. The Governor of West Bengal has introduced a lump sum amount of Rs 100 crores for a house building loan. This will enable the government to get free plots of land for building houses/flats, named the state government’s land reforms.
  • Kanyashree: The state has a youth population of about 1.73 crores, of which 48.11% are girls. Girl child trafficking and child marriage are shocking and unacceptable problems. This West Bengal Government scheme aims to eradicate these problems and protect the girl children. It prevents child marriage by maintaining the terms of the official minimum legal age of marriage. It also provides scholarships to encourage the education of girls from underprivileged families.
  • Karmatirtha: With this scheme, the government encourages entrepreneurs from the lower middle class and backward class to start their businesses. This officially allows them to start their business by selling their products directly to customers. The government provides the required infrastructure, finance, and training material to the entrepreneurs during their launch.
  • Rupasree: This government scheme provides a sum of Rs 25,000 to a daughter from economically challenged families getting married. It reduces the financial burden of the families during the time of marriage.
