Political leaders of Punjab
1. Vijay Sampla
He is a famous minister in India for social justice and empowerment.
From the Hoshiarpur constituency, he is a part of the constitution.
As a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he also won the general election of India in 2014.
In 2014, he became a standing committee member on external affairs. He also defeated Mohinder Singh kaypee (member of INC part) from the Hoshiarpur constituency.
He was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha. He has worked in many fields in Punjab, such as forest development, environmental issues, schools, hospitals, etc.
2. Sunil Jhakar
One of the most popular Punjabi MPs is Sunil Jhakar. He is president of ‘The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee’.
He is also an MP from the Abohar constituency; Sunil Jhakar was elected three times in the constituency.
He defeated former MLA of BJP Ram Kumar by 17,000 votes and was re-elected for the MLA’s position in 2007.
Later, in 2012, he became the MLA when he contested and won in Vidhan Sabha. He lost against Arun Narang in the assembly elections in 2017 with just 3,279 votes.
On 14th October 2017, in Punjab, he was elected in the Gurdaspur by-election in the 16th Lok Sabha.
In 2018, he also became a member of the environment & forest committee and the science & technology committee.
3. Sukhbir Singh Badal
Sukhbir Singh Badal is one of the most well-known political leaders of Punjab. He is the president of Shiromani Akali Dal, an official Sikh political party.
He was also deputy chief minister from 2009 to 2017. He has represented Faridkot as a member of the 11th Lok Sabha and the 12th Lok Sabha.
From 1998-to 1999, he was also a union minister of Punjab in the Vajpayee ministry.
From 2001 to 2004, he was also a Rajya Sabha member. He was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha.
In the 11th Lok Sabha, he was elected as a member of parliament (Faridkot constituency).
In the 12th Lok Sabha, he was re-elected as a Punjab mp from the same constituency.
In 2001, he was elected in the Rajya Sabha as an MP. there, and he served from 2001 to 2004.
In the 14th Lok Sabha, he was again re-elected as an MP in 2008, and he became the president of SAD.
He was finally a deputy chief minister by winning in the Jalalabad assembly in 2009.
4. Ranjit Singh Brahmpura
Ranjit Singh Brahmpura is one of the most popular politicians of Punjab and a member of parliament from the Khadoor Sahib Constituency.
As a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, he also won the general election in India in 2014.
He was also a member of the Punjab legislative assembly.
Under the government of Punjab, he was also a cabinet minister from 2007 to 2012.
He defeated Harminder Singh Gill in 2014 and was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha. In 2014, he became the official leader of Shiromani Akali Dal in the Lok Sabha.
Also, in 2014, he became a member of the rules committee and the public accounts committee.
He also was a member of external affairs in the standing committee. Later, he became a member of the consultative committee of the ministry of home affairs.
5. Navjot Singh Sidhu
One of the most famous Punjab MPs is Navjot Singh Sidhu. He also has worked as the minister of cultural affairs and museums, minister of tourism for Punjab.
In Lok Sabha, he was elected in 2004 from Amritsar. His political timeline is fascinating and successful.
He also won a by-election by having the majority. He also took an oath on 28th April 2016 to be a Rajya Sabha member.
On 18th July, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha. In 2017, he joined INC and won the election for Punjab.
He was appointed as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress committee in 2021, and later on, he resigned from this post on 28th September 2021.
6. Ambika Soni
Ambika Soni is a part of the Indian national congress. In the upper house of the Indian parliament, Rajya Sabha, she represents Punjab.
At the beginning of her political career, she participated as a volunteer for the congress party. There she was recognized and gained fame quickly.
She worked as a leader of the Indian youth congress from 1972 to 1977 with Sanjay Gandhi.
She was the woman behind Atulya Bharat’s campaign. In 1996, she became the president of the committee of the Punjab Pradesh congress.
Later, she became the president of the All India Mahila Congress’ president in 1998. In 2006, she became the minister of culture and tourism in UPA-1.
From 2009 to 2012, she was the minister of information and broadcasting.
In 2012 and 2017, she was elected to Rajya Sabha for Punjab.
