The Arjuna Award, also known as the Arjuna Awards on Outstanding Performance in Sports as well as Games, is India’s second-highest athletic prize, after the Khel Ratna Award. The prize is titled following Arjuna, a key figure in ancient India’s Sanskrit epic Mahabharata.

Arjuna is among the Pandavas, represented like a great shooter who marries Draupadi, and during the Kurukshetra War, Krishna turns their charioteer, educating them Hindu holy wisdom of the Gita. After Rama, Lakshman, then Parshurama, he is regarded as one of the finest soldiers of Vedic Era.

Through Hinduism, he is regarded as a sign of perseverance, determination, and focus.   The Ministry of Youth Affairs gives it to a deserving young person each year. Prior to the establishment of such Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna during 1991–1992. The Arjuna award became India’s top athletic honour.  Nominations for the award are accepted across all state National Sports Federations, the Indian Olympic Association, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Sports Promotion and Control Boards, state / union region government entities, and previous year’s Major Dhyan Chandra Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dhyan Chand, and Dronacharya awardees.

The honorees were chosen by a Ministry-appointed committee and are recognized with outstanding “excellent achievement in the area of sports during a four-year period” so at the international stage, as well as “characteristics of management, tolerance, as well as a spirit of professionalism.” And from 2020, the honour included “a bronze sculpture of Arjuna, a trophy, ceremonial robe, and a cash prize of 15 lakh rupees.” The prize, which was established in 1961 to honour the country’s greatest athletes, has gone through a number of modifications, assessments, and explanations throughout the years.

In 1977, the prize was expanded to cover all approved professions; in 1995, national sports and physically challenged categories were added; and in 1995, a lifelong achievement category was added, resulting in the foundation of a distinct Dhyan Chand Award in 2002.

Also, it suggests offering just fifteen prizes every year, allowing in cases of outstanding achievement in big multi-sport events, sports teams, crossing sexual identity, and awarding at minimum one award here to physically handicapped class.
