The state of Assam is located in northeastern India, with the eastern Himalayas along the flowing river valleys to the north. 

The area of the state is 78,438 square km. It has Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to its north; Manipur and Nagaland to its east; Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west. 

According to the census of 2011, the total population of Assam was 31.16 crore. Assam state is well known for its superior quality tea and silk.

Population of Assam

The population of Assam consists of minorities as well as the majority. 

The Hindu population is around three-fifths of the total population and thus forms the majority in Assam. Hindus in Assam follow Vaishnavism, which worships the deity, Lord Vishnu. 

One-third of the population belongs to the religion Islam, of which most Muslims are the emigrants from Bangladesh or the poor Hindus converted to Islam.

Scheduled Tribes are the rural indigenous people who fall outside the Indian caste system. These tribes form the significant minority population of Assam, of which the Bodo tribe has a remarkable population. Most Scheduled Tribes live in the south-central hill region and are of Asiatic descent.

Assamese, an Indo-Aryan language, is the state’s official and principal language.

Assam State has its own anthem.

Assam state has its own anthem, to the surprise of everyone. The state officially adopted this anthem as its state song at the Assam Student Conference held in Tezpur in 1927. 

Assamese poet, novelist, and playwright of modern Assamese literature, Lakshminath Bezbaroa, was the person to write the anthem. The anthem is called “O Mur Apunar Dex”, which means “O my dearest country”.

It makes Assam a unique state from all the other states since no state has its own anthem.

Bihu is celebrated three times in Assam.

Bihu is a well-known festival in the state of Assam. Bihu is the harvest festival celebrated in Assam, marking the end of the harvesting season in the region. The Assamese people celebrate it for two days. This festival is celebrated three times a year by the Assamese.

Rongali/Bohag Bihu is observed in April and celebrated by doing feasts, singing songs, and dancing. Children wear flower garlands and greet everyone with a new year, while some people hang the brass, copper, or silver pots on poles in front of their house.

People observe Kongali or Kati Bihu in October. Assamese lit up the lamps or candles, Saaki, in the evening in various places during this festival. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped and welcomed to the home, paddy fields by lightening the earthen lamps.

The people of Assam celebrate Bhogali or Magh Bihu in January. It begins with a holy dip in rivers or doing ceremonial bathing. “Bhuj,” a feast done to enjoy the freshly harvested crops. Some people also light bonfires and have social gatherings.

Assam is home to the One-Horned Rhinos.

Assam state has the World Heritage Site of Kaziranga, which has the world’s biggest one-horned rhino population. 

The population of great one-horned rhinoceroses in Kaziranga is two-thirds of the world. In 2015, authorities recorded the population of Rhinos in the park as 2,401.

Kaziranga National Park is not only famous for the rhinos, but also it is famous for its wide variety of flora and fauna, which beautify its surroundings. In 2006, it was declared a Tiger Reserve.

Assam can boast of India’s first 5-star river cruise.

Assam state has the first 5-star river cruise: M.V Mahabaahu. The cruise vessel, built in Kolkata, has state-of-the-art facilities.
