Laxmi Vilas Castle: Vadodara’s Imperial Family’s Residence
Laxmi Vilas Mansion, one of Gujarat’s prominent historical sites, is the home of Vadodara’s royal dynasty, called Gaekwad. The palace dates back to 1890 when Maharaja Sayaji Rao III established it. The front is elaborately created utilising classic Indo-Saracenic Revival type architecture, covering a length of 500 acres.
Many films have been shot inside the Darbar Room of ancient Laxmi Vilas Castle. The palace seems to be four times larger than the famous Buckingham Palace, making it one of the world’s largest private residences.
Temple of Dwarkadhish
Dwarkadhish Mandir, commonly referred to as the Jagat Mandir, seems to be an important Hindu pilgrimage site devoted to Bhagavan Krishna; it is one of the Char Dhams. So, it has to be included in this selection of Gujarat’s top historical sites. This five-story archaeological masterpiece, reinforced by 72 columns, could have been constructed as early as 2200 centuries ago.
Situated near Gomti Creek, the temple is often crowded with pilgrims, particularly during the famous Janmashtami celebration. Throughout this period, temples and statues are colourfully decked with garlands, jewellery, and various adornments.
Dholavira
Dholavira is a 4500-year-old ancient archaeological site from the Indus Valley Civilisation, also known as the Harappan civilisation. This famous part of Gujarat is located in the Kutch Taluka of Bhachau.
Palace of Vijay Vilas
Rao Vijayraj Ji constructed Vijay Vilas Mansion near Mandvi Beach around 1929. It was primarily used as the summer residence by the Jadeja emperors of the Kutch region. The royal dynasty of Kutch currently calls this spectacular castle home, making it one of Gujarat’s greatest historical sites. Here you may notice a rhythmic combination of three construction styles, particularly Rajput, Mughal, and Victorian.
The palace sprawls over 450 hectares and is surrounded by groomed gardens and a two-kilometre private beach. A portion of the castle has been turned into a premium historical resort, another of India’s top luxurious properties.
The Sun Temple
The Sun Temple near Modhera is one of Gujarat’s most famous historical sites. This Hindu temple is devoted to the Sun Deity and located on the Pushpawati River’s bank. The temple was established in 1026 AD, under the reign of Bhima I of the Chalukya Dynasty.
However, no sacrifices or prayers are made here nowadays; instead, it has primarily become a significant tourist attraction, according to the Archaeological Census of India. This temple is indeed a sight to behold, displaying the finest of Maru-Gurjara designs. The Sun Mandir of Modhera has been frequently included as one of India’s best attractions.
Temple of Somnath
It is claimed that Somnath Temple, another of Gujarat’s most prominent monuments, is the earliest of Lord Shiva’s 12 Jyotirlinga temples. This temple has already been restored several times, with the most current modification being in 1951 when the Chalukya architectural style was adopted.
