Vijayawada

Vijayawada is one of the famous pilgrimage places in Andhra Pradesh. It is pretty famous as the city of temples. As the name suggests, the city has many temples and other religious places. The majority of them are Hindu temples, but some mosques and churches are also present. 

The most popular ones are the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the one dedicated to Lord Krishna. The most famous temple is Sri Kanaka Durga Temple. This temple is more than 1500 years old and was built by King Kanakadasa. The temple has another name, Dakshina Kailasam.

Tirupati

Tirupati is one of the famous pilgrimage places in Andhra Pradesh. It is also called the abode of Lord Venkateswara. The temple is situated in the Tirumala hills, and it is one of the richest temples in India. 

The temple attracts a large crowd of devotees every day and welcomes more than 50,000 visitors. Millions of people visit this temple during the Brahmotsavam festival every year. King Chola built it, Raja Raja I, in 1030 AD, and Vijayanagara kings later renovated it in the 15th century.

Golconda Fort

Built by Qutub Shahi Kings, this is an architectural wonder. It served as a fortress for defence. Kakatiya kings used mud to make this citadel in the 12th century. In the 16th century, Qutab Shahi fortified this fort even further.

You’ll find many halls, mosques, and apartments inside this fort. A visit to this fort’s gateway, Balahisar Darwaza, is necessary. Many underground tunnels lead to Durbar Hall in this fort, located on a hill and has a sound ventilation system. The defence has two pavilions outside.

Tirumala

Tirumala is a pilgrimage shrine of Lord Venkateswara located at Tirumala hill in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. The temple complex covers an area of 16.67 acres and is situated at the seventh peak -Venkatadri. The mountains are 2,000 ft high. To reach there, one needs to climb hundreds of steps. 

Chandragiri

Chandragiri is an important name in the history of Andhra Pradesh. It is located in the Tirupati district. The citadel has two sections, the Lower Fort and the Upper Fort, covering 25 acres. The Lower Fort extends across a plain to the south of a hill. Since it is severely crescent-shaped, it is named Chandragiri (meaning ‘hill of the moon’). Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal are two well-preserved structures here.

Srisailam

Srisailam is a pilgrimage place of Andhra Pradesh located in the Krishnagiri range in the Kurnool district. One of the 12 “tirthas” or holy sites revered by Hindus is a pilgrimage destination for natives. And lakhs of pilgrims worldwide flock to Srisailam during the Pushya Utsavams, when Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati is unavailable for worship. Ironically, Srisailam’s name was derived from the word Prasailam, meaning “place that has turned into a river.

Charminar

Charminar is a historic monument in central Hyderabad, India. The cultural landmark was built in 1591 by Muḥammad Qulī Quṭb Shah, the fifth king of the Quṭb Shāhī dynasty. It is said to be the oldest pilgrimage in Hyderabad. Over the years, the monument has become a symbol of the city’s heritage and a significant landmark.
